This topic is mostly for SOE, but feel free to add your opinion!
I was wondering how SOE could repay the love we keep sending them day-by-day, doing the viral marketing, "putting PS2 on the map" - like Higby said. Well, you can put us to the map too, Mr. Higby! What do I mean by that? You already have a backstory. You have multiple continents with diverse terrain. Use these to mention the veterans of PS1! PS1 didn't have any geographical references. No name for a mountain, no name for a canyon, no name for a platou, a lake, a river. Make it living! And name them after the heroes of PS1! It was hard to refer on them ingame without names, and it would add depth story-wise too. Use the names of the outfits to give names to your terrain! The ones who reached the 10Mill barrier, those who bacame iconic or server-wide known. These and others may be mentioned in the backstory - not with a role, just as some background. A group of Mercs returning from a mission (no losses again), a Kaaos formation of reavers passes the sky, Red October is heard to have a tough fight in the caves, Outcasters are massing up again filling multiple gals with recruits... (sorry, I'm just a TR werner... ) The server names may not be forgotten either. Konried, Johari, Markov, Emerald, Werner and Gemini at last. Sounds like a squad of the elite troops, maybe the first unit that boarded that alien monolith with Thomas Connery and that Briggs fella? They may be the largest formations of Auraxis... How do you like the idea to see your outfit's name on the map of Auraxis? How do you feel when you imagine to read it in the ingame chat, or hear it in TS from people not even playing PS1? They will probably not even be aware that the river he is trying to cross under the suppression of the enemy is named after your old outfit! |

Honestly I'd rather have Monoliths as in PS1 and just had outfit names mentioned there with a description. Otherwise it'll look like those outfits are named after places. That'd be very annoying to explain to newcomers.
EDIT: even more, how about custom text designed by outfit? Later, creation of these monoliths can be an Outfit Wars AWARD or something... EDIT2: AWARD, missed a word. Last edited by NewSith; 2011-11-28 at 05:37 PM. |

I would rather they allowed us to name particular places based around our exploits in PS2... many of the PS1 players may not return, and if so in other outfits. Its been almost a decade, many people that did play will not play again due to real world commitments.
Say an outfit that captures a territory a specific number of times first gets to name it. |

Ya i can see where you are coming from man but who knows what outfits are going to be in PS2. Then there is to hoping prior outfits returned and with the same leaders. Not to mention the same outfit name or similar is going to be on multiple servers. Also with the mention of outfit names in the backstory you are going to see every different rendition of that same name in PS2 and that would be annoying.
I would be very happy with some kind of badge or shiny sneakers not everyone else has. I think there will be something along those lines. |

I LOVE Taxi's idea. It doesn't matter if anyone ever knows the meaning. It doesn't mater if there are dozens or hundreds of things/places named after guys who never come back to play PS2. The fact that so many locations never had a name - and probably should have one - makes it a no brainer. For the few guys who do come back and come to find out SOE honored them in this way - well, that'd be AWESOME for them. I vote for Taxi's idea because I think it's all about SONY showing some LOVE and giving some good vibes back to their loyal fans and the gaming community in general. I think it's a really cool idea with merit on every level. I chuckle ..... becasue I'm sure a small group of OLD veterans will eventually find their way back to PS2 long after Beta ..... and CRY that they don't have a mountain pass or river named after them. whatever. I think it's a cool idea ..... a GREAT idea. btw - Trolltaxi River or Mount Trolltaxi .... or Trolltaxi Valley don't work for me. However, I'd vote to change the Deli or Sunderer name to the "TrollTaxi". THAT would work for me ! ....and...I could see a particularly nasty and impassable part of a map dubbed the "EVILPIG SWAMP"..... DvidLeff's idea has a lot of merit. I only worry that an effective Outfit of experienced ego-crazed, and selfish asshats end up naming too much territory in a manner that runs counter to a game that is based on teamwork - not selfish self-grandizing acknowledgement. Capture that range becasue it benefits your Empire - not so you can forever name it Mt Asshat. . . Last edited by Chaff; 2011-11-30 at 11:28 AM. |

I have a lot of respect for the guys who already posted on this thread. I like Basti's idea. I'd start there with names.
I don't think SOE should sell naming rights - at least not to major landmarks. Best not to put that in their "store" at all. I was thinking they could go thru their archives of PS1 and decide in-house what squads and/or former players might get the honor, or simply just "fit" as decent names for geograpic formations, regions,...... They could come up with a weighted system - after all the high-scorers got the prime geograpical loacations named after them - they could come up with a weighted system that favored any player - regardless of skill - based on time logged-in playing the game. I like giving passes, rivers, forests, plains, mountains, plateaus, valleys, and other landmarks names. What better names to use - going forward - than using some of the former PS players. Can't hurt. My first vote is for "EvilPig Swamp". I hated the JHing NC zerg that seemed to blindly follow his wake....seemed to be a lot of Reaver spamm with his followers as well.....and they were GOOD pilots. I wouldn't use nicks of individuals - that could easily make bad blood. "Why is he a ridge, and why am I a swamp; he's a spawncamper, go give that name to lava-pit, that would offer as long lifespan for anyone as a scatmax infront of the tube... etc."
While anyone could name dozens of skilled/fun/decent etc. players.. or let me go a step forward: all can call important names (ie.: important to the whole community like the PSU staff for example), it would still be a bad idea to pick names because others may be forgotten. People using their old PS names will probably carry on with their names, and it would be stupid to call someone like the swamp... And there are names that simply won't get sold as a geographical name (like mine - Trolltaxi, or 4na14ng3l and stuff like that). That is why I wouldn't dare to sell the right of the naming. Well maybe for zillions of outfit points with the right of SOE to refuse using the name suggested without further explaination. Outfits will carry on with their names too. But a group picking a name of a geographic landmark is still better than individuals. So even if the names match, it doesn't seem unfitting into the lore. |
