Don't forget that Bungie will also be following up Planetside 2 with their own MMO-action game (could be FPS/melee/etc), now that they're free of the Halo curse.

Props to SOE for being first in the chute, and I think they'll make an absolute killing with PS2, but I'm very pumped to see all the additional games in this genre that SOE will inspire.

Don't call Bungie's new game an MMOFPS, they've shot that down themselves, they're making a new game that will have some mmo features but not inherently be an mmo. They haven't even said that it's an fps.

Shouldn't take rumours that started well over a year ago as fact, ESPECIALLY when that particular rumour was started by Kotaku, the fox news of gaming news.

It's worth keeping an ear out for new news, it's not worth anything without any confirmations or details though.

Seriously, what do you guys think of, if PS2 is successful, SOE hiring a completely new and additional team to develop MMOFPS of other themes? ie, modern, WW2, cold war, whatever? And the reason I say new and additional team is because if I simply said "what do you think of SOE developing additional MMOFPSs of different themes", someone would object on the basis that it would take away from PS2.

It doesn't work like that out in the big world. Once a game is released, the actual development team usually moves on to new projects and leave the content updates/polishing to another team. The reasoning, as per usual in my posts, are due to the funding. Using the already established development team on new projects ensure that they will keep rolling out high-quality titles and being effective while doing it.

SOE in this case wants to make money on their game, keeping a staff of 70+ people to do "simple" content updates usually isn't feasible unless it's an expansion á Burning Crusade / Cataclysm. Even so these expansions tend to be less funded than the original game, simply because they're already making money and want to keep a profit.

SOE already has different IP's they're working on, but I doubt they will launch other MMOFPS games once PS2 is rolling. Why would they want to re-invent the wheel and compete with themself?

As I said earlier, I have realized that a lot of players will be unwilling to play PS2 because it is future theme - but they still want to play shooters, they prefer a more modern theme. As a result, I believe there are enough potential non-future theme players to justify this. Yes, there will be SOME overlap but I think they stand to gain more from branching to other themes than they would lose by competing with themselve.
