I just had to share this at least. An idea for zip-lines and point 2 point teleportation. Rather than doing one or the other (or just using only jump pads), how about mixing their designs up a bit? No need for any lines in the air clogging up the sky. How about point to point teleportation that operates -similarly- to the effects of a zipline?
Think of it like this. You walk up to the entrance device. You convert to an energy beam of your factions color (or some similar look like a 'light fog' that generates a light of your factions primary color). Your camera instantly zips to the exit device. You wait for the 'light fog' of yourself to reach the device before exiting. The exit device would make a humming noise of sorts and start to light up during use, getting brighter or noisier (or both) the closer you are to exiting. It keeps some sort of travel time from point A to point B without taking the time to walk there. It also would allow it to be risky in the fact that its shouting 'hey yeah, a guys using the teleport device!' and makes it a bit more dangerous to use. I like quick transport being a risk/reward factor like that. (Example, i LIKE ladders. They are death traps! Getting caught on one is usualy a death sentence in games that use them.) The light fog could have funny effects on vehicles that happen to be in the way. From being a straight up EMP vehicle disable, messing up implants nad causing your screen to stay a funny color for a little bit (or just remains red blue or purple depending on who went through you), to harmless. They could also be just short transport devices that give you an idea where you are going to exit before you exit as well as warn the guy on the other end. |

regardless of the implementation, the visuals, etc. I prefer the idea of a teleporter to a jump pad absolutely.
I posted about this a few minutes ago in a thread about the jump pads. To me a teleporter just makes more sense. It has the same function, and is no more or less easy to abuse or grief. Mainly I like it better because it could actually feel immersive and fit into the idea of a futuristic world. I can buy the idea that these bases implement portals for transportation but having man cannons propelling people through the air like in the circus is just stupid looking and lame to me. teleporters all the way. |

I like teleporters, but I also like the thought about some risk to the use of the device. A straight up instant-tele from A to B has a lot less risk than a device that essentialy teleports you, but the recieving end recieves a warning as you come. Still lets you defend yourself but gives the guys on the other end a headsup.
But yes,i agree. I do prefer the teleport approach over the mancannon approach. (Granted, rediculously strong mancannons can be quite funny...) |

The jump pads did seem kinda silly at first but there are some positives. It gives you a chance to see what you are getting into, a way get a larger view of the battle while traveling between points, it makes you vulnerable to attack while in flight, and also the enemy can see where troops are massing. To me there are more pros than cons to the "man-cannon".
