Hello all, I know that the specifications haven't been released yet. But for all you tech junkies out there, does this look like a decent build?
CPU:I7 2600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115071 GPU:NVDIA GeForce 480 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130759 Mobo:GIGABYTE GA-H77-DS3H http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128550 RAM:8GB DDR3 1600 Ripjaw (2 x 4GB) http://www.newegg.com/Produc/Product...82E16820231314 I know that the mobo isn't the best, but it is perfect for Hackintosh PCs which I plan to dual boot with. For right now I'll be using a 700 watt PSU and already have a case. I am also considering getting a solid state HDD but i'm not sure I want to spend the extra cash. I'm hoping this will allow me to play most games on high and maybe a couple on ultra. Thoughts? Last edited by mjokc; 2012-05-30 at 08:27 PM. |

I think he is referring to PS2. That build seems to be all over the place TBH. Please answer the questions Vancha linked you. What 700W PSU and case do you have specifically (brand, model, etc).

Save some money by getting an i5 2500K or 3550 or 3570K instead of the i7.
Planning on overclocking? If not, I'd go with the 3550. If you are going to overclock get either of the 'k' cpus. In terms of motherboards you need to think about 3 things: Do I get the chipset I need? Do you get the slots and features you need? Does the thing had a specific bad history? Your're probably ok on all counts with Gigabyte and the H77. I don't know anything about the hackintosh stuff but: I'm not a fan of memory with fancy heat sinks and stuff. Doesn't seem like a bad buy...Reasonable 8gb kits are all w/in like $10 of each other anyway. Don't get the 480. I think the best buy for videocards right now is the GTX 670...that's an extra ~$170 from where you are. Going to the cheaper cpu is $70 of that. Otherwise...I'd say the 560Ti

Update: This system is awesome and an absolute beast! It maxes out BF3, Skyrim, Diablo 3, Batman, Max Payne 3 & Resident Evil with absolutely no problems at all. I haven't tried any other games, but I'm sure it will max out just about every current game right now. The 480 isn't as loud as I thought it was going to be, hell it's quieter than my last card, lol. However like Vancha said, the 480 does heat up a small room quicky but it doesn't run high temps, so the heat distribution may be by design.

I'm glad its working for you however that is a really odd build. It would of benefited you if you got actual feedback on this prior to ordering.

Its just you didn't list any reason why you needed the 2600. Instead you could of just got the 2400. Used the extra money to possibly even stretch for a 670 for example is all. If there was any issues with the 670 I don't see why you couldn't use the onboard graphics for Lion.

That's pretty weird as the iMac comes with i5s I'd think it'd work fine. There really isn't a difference between and i7 and an i5.
If the hackintosh was based on the idea of using the Pro as a base...that comes with Xeons. (Also, sweet jesus mac Pro's are expensive. 3gb ram, 2.8ghz Xeon, AMD 5770 - $2500)

I think this is why they've been pushing tablets and mobile devices so hard. Windows isn't quite the joke it used to be and with prices like that, Apple will not be able to stay competitive in the tower and laptop markets. |

I was trying to boot camp a 64 bit windows 7 install onto a 1st gen core i5 on a MacBook pro not too long ago. Everything said it should be compatible, but somehow, it wasn't. Boot camp would not recognize the install CD, and after some major trickery, I managed to get the installer open from a live USB, but it crashed shortly after. I ended up having to install a 32 bit windows 8 consumer preview there (cost that's the only kind of 32 bit windows OS I had the spare license for), and that seemed to work fine. Looking back at the issues, I had found a few other having similar problems, and no one ever found an explanation. People argue that m$ is very secretive with their stuff... but Apple is even worse, especially since most of the time they have their own standards for everything (like no bios). So I am not surprised he was looking for a specific processor.
They're starting to lose there too.
