Actually there are "real" laser now. Built on defense drones for taking out balistic missiles in-flight. However... I feel lasers aren't actually what the VS uses. I don't know the right term for it but if you've played eve online, you see the difference between lasers and blasters. VS has always leaned more towards the blasters, no?

From what I've seen in the various footage VS guns seem more like plasma blasters than laser guns. |

Lasers are highly focused beams of radiation. Blasters shoot superheated gas. An actual laser gun would require hitscan, which throws balance out the door immediately. Blasters however act like lasers shot in bolts, which is reasonable excuse for exemption from bullet drop. If damage were decreased over distance to require more shots, it'd be easily balanced.

Yeah like that, doesn't even need to be hit scan, can be projectile going at close to 300 000 000 meter per second(186 000 miles per second), totally not imbalance.
The weird things is apparently VS gun don't suffer from projectile decay, but clearly aren't laser... |

This reminds me of both the DXR-6 disruptor from the jedi knight series and the phase rifle from tribes.
Both a lot of fun. Though the concept of say one of these hitscan lasers being the same damage but take have to charge up or prime before fire and having a longer reload. say that TR- semi auto, .308 ish round for higher ROF and lower damage per round as well as a larger mag of 20 bullets or something NC- Bolt action, .50 or bigger, insane damage per shot (maybe even chest shotting lighter classes? but with MUCH lower ammo count 5 as well as a lower ROF and longer reload. VS- Hitscan lazzor... Prime up to fire, damage inbetween other two. ROF slower than both as it needs to Prime (this ROF counters the hitscan and lack of distance calculations etc But yes needs to be in ideas thread (I also believe that this is in actual fact what is currently in place for VS infiltrators already) |
