I remember back in the days of Battlefield:Vietnam one of the coolest things to do was using a Huey transport to pick up vehicles and fly them across the map for your buddies. That got me thinking about the possibility of galaxies being able to perform the same task. Am I the only one who thinks that would be awesome?

If I'm a Gal pilot I'm not gonna haul a huge heavy tank halfway across the map for free y'know! |

I really hope they have a serperate limit on every vehicle in the gal. For example, 1 prowler/magrider/whatever the hell the NCs MBT is called limit should not apply for flashes(that is, if the galaxy can transport main battle tanks). Also, two questions.
1) Could you fit airborne vehicles in the galaxy in Planetside 1? Sure it's useless but it's COOL. 2) Could you drop the ground vehicles from a certain elevation and not have them explode? EDIT: Just thought of something, how about we have a few variations of Galaxies that we can have? Kind of like the different max variations. |

Can you actually provide a prooflink? Because I though the last thing they said was that the ability is "being discussed". (PM me if it gets locked before you answer).
I mean, I don't see prowler fitting into the galaxy. Anyway, Higby (I think) said that they were planning to add Lodestar (check the wikilink) postlaunch to carry heavy vehicles, and it might above all act as a ground vehicle terminal. EDIT: I'm pretty sure customisation will allow us to have Galaxy Troop Transport, and Galaxy Gunship as variations, so no need for adding variants where you can simply customise the original. In PS, a Galaxy could carry a light vehicle. In PS2, people will be able to cert into the same; the devs have said it will be something that can be certed into.
Larger vehicles such as tanks were carried by a vehicle called the Lodestar, which resembled a large shoebox with fins. Last edited by Electrofreak; 2012-06-24 at 03:03 PM. |

If the galaxy ends up having vehicle transport capabilities, and I'm thinking under the tail hookup ala Halo, not in a hold loading ala PS1 (though graphically that would be less intensive on systems,) I'd like to know if I can spawn a tank, park it, grab a gal, then pick up my tank and haul it. While it is resource intensive, I can imagine how cool it would be to get a mission to deliver a tank to someone in the field, and get reimbursement as a reward for completing the task.
Realistically, I expect people to jaunt a short ways towards the nearest tube, despawn, then respawn somewhere where they can procure a tank, even though it may be some distance away. Just this way, the individual can stay on the front lines while the support minded players handle supplying the front line with rolling devastation. Mind you, the tank would likely be limited to what the delivery pilot is capable requisitioning, so it would probably still be in the intended drivers best interest to at least return to base, grab their tank, then ask for a pilot to transport them. Hrm... of course this idea begs another question: if I requisition any vehicle, is there any way for other players to commandeer my tank if I grant them access to? I'm thinking my idea is half dead in the water XD The tank purchasing and supplying part anyway. One word: certifications. Last edited by Littleman; 2012-06-24 at 03:09 PM. |

If the maps are 8km by 8km, then the longest possible source to destination route (assuming a square map) is 11.3km. A Sunderer can travel this route in about ten minutes at 70kph. Tanks are probably going to be a bit slower (they don't have speedometers in the E3 footage, so it's hard to say exactly how fast they can move), but I would be surprised if they were more than 33% slower. As such, it is relatively safe to assume that a tank traversing the same route would arrive at the destination in no more than fifteen minutes. That might sound like a long time, but the only time you will ever be making such a long drive is when your empire owns the entire continent, which returns to my opening thought, why would this scenario ever occur? The only reasonable occurrence I can think of is if you push one enemy faction back to their foothold and that faction leaves the continent completely, at which point you have to go to the other enemy's foothold (whom your faction has also pushed all the way back). But a warpgate to warpgate route isn't anywhere near the absolute maximum of 11.3km (using this map as a reference); the greatest distance between two warpgates on Indar is only ~5.5km, givng a tank an estimated travel time of around seven minutes. Indeed, in all but the most contrived scenarios, you will never be driving for more than a few minutes to get back to the action. This is quite reasonable.

From the following stream it is stated that (timer at around 17:20+) the Galaxy will not have the ability to carry vehicles from the start.
They are currently thinking about adding it through certifications/customization but it seems like nothing has been concluded around this topic yet. Last edited by Vanr; 2012-06-24 at 03:23 PM. |
