Prone really doesn't add *that* much to the game to be worth the effort required to put it in. In addition to the coding changes (which ye gods know how long it would take as the engine was not designed to support it...at all) there are all the animations and views of the prone soldier. 4 armor types (Inf, Agile, Rexo, Standard) x 3 factions = 12 animations. Sure, doesn't sound like much, but I doubt PS has that many animators on the staff at this point...probably one or two at the most. Could take them three or four months to just get the art assets in. I personally would rather those same animators use that time to work on something a little more meaningful...a group of new tanks or aircraft, for instance.

That's the problem with prone. For the work involved in putting it in, it doesn't add much...especially in comparison to the work that those same assets COULD be doing to add real content to the game. I support the Devs desicion to leave it out until there is time to put it in, even if that means it never makes it into the game.

I'm growing weary of having to explain things like this...but if you're silouthetted against a hilltop or wall and getting sniped...there's a simple message:

"Move"

I'm a sniper and have a few infiltrator characters, I have no problems with no prone. Then again, I generally move when I see those bright lights coming at me and my health starts dropping.

So how was your experience of prone during early beta, then? Would be cool to have some actual "been there" stories in this discussion

How many rocks are to short to crouch behind?
Not many, I'll give you that one.

Those walls all have large blocks that stick up at very regular intervols(sp) you can stand beihnd those and not get hit.
Also true.

Going prone would just make it that easier for a Cloaker or Surger to get up next to you and blow your brains out.
Then if you are overly concerned about this, don't go prone. I doubt you will be forced to go prone, if prone is ever introduced into gameplay.

I for one would like prone. Not being able to really hit the dirt when needed, makes me feel handicapped. I do recognize some of the risks with introducing it. The sniper would most likely get a great buff with this. However, it would leave them even more vulnerable to attacks from the rear. Turning around would be very slow. Switching weapons should also take longer. So the buff might not be as great as one would think. But I'm just speculating here.

I would love to see prone in game, prone = Delpoyable machine guns. that would be kool. Or if they added shrubs and bushes a bit more (lag anyone?) then crawling threw it would be awesome

If what Rbstr says is true about there being prone in early beta, then I'd say the engine most likely supports it.

Yeah, same story as always. People keep screaming for new things; new weapons, new tanks, new airplanes, new certs, new buildings, new this, more that. I'd say prone is as much REAL content in this game, as a new tank, and in comparison prone would have a greater impact on gameplay.

But I agree on things like capitol buildings, and continent domination, need to have a higher priority. But, in all honesty now, this discussion isn't about how the devs should prioritize their development. It's about what impact introducing prone would have on PlanetSide. Bad, or good.

I personally don't like the idea of prone. I think crouching is enough. I hate dying from people I can hardly/if at all see (you know what I'm talking about if you play bf1942) and if you could go prone there would be a lot more people just sitting around in high traffic areas blasting everyone away from a really safe vanatage point instead of actually getting into the game and moving.

Yeah, I can totally see how running and throwing yourself headlong to the ground would make you lose all respect for it. It's totally not like doing it in real life would make you, like, totally harder to hit or anything along those lines.. Totally

Yeah, I think your concerns are valid, actually. However, don't you think it might force people to play in a bit more tactical fashion? It could make them think twice about just respawning, re-suit, and just rush madly back again along with the zerg

They exparemented with it way back, but ti didn't work right, if you were to lay down and a hit you would stay level, instead of conforming to the ground, so you stuck out in the air.

I wasn't in beta at the point when they experamented with it but there were screenshots floating around on onf of the other fan sites.

The thing is the kind of graphix we have, with no camo, and basicaly no foliage, you can't hid when your prone you stick out just as much standing.

The only thing i coudl see for prone was if you have Attachments to weapons ala AA:SF were you could put a bipod on an MA weapons for more accuracy, otherwise its useless.

And as for going prone while jumping i can't see how you could physicaly goe pron in mid air, diving behind cover is a different stoy, you don't jump when you do that you fall forward.

Going prone in the air is gay, diving to the ground works, but actually LAYING in the air is just, retarded.

Exactly Dhark. There is a distinct difference between going prone in mid air and diving to the ground. Notably one violates the laws of physics and common sense, on top of looking pretty silly, and the other doesn't.
