It could have been a worm. There are some worms that don't require you to do anything but open the email in order to infect your system. If you're CPU usage is still high, check your processes and it should tell you what process is using the CPU. If it's one that you don't recognize, end it.
Oh yeah, and just because you know who the email is from doesn't mean it's not a virus. Lots of viruses will fordge the from address and make it look like it's from somebody you know.
