Sputnik I was the first artificial satellite in space. It was launched by the communist union of Russia, not the USSR. (USSR was created after the Cold War.) It caused the American Space Race in which we tried to be the first country to put a man in space. Unfortunatly, we were too slow because of the failed rocket tests on the Atlas, Redstone, and Titan rockets. Yuri Gagarian was the first man in space, a Russian. Shortly there after, Alan Shepard was the first American in space.
