Ok, after thinking about it, here is my serious answer:

Fold one rope once, then twice, then cut off a quarter of the rope. Burn one whole rope, then burn the quarter piece of rope.

But

they

don't

burn

linearly

That is, burning half the rope does not equal 30 minutes

You could use the lighter as a guide for the vehicle coming in to help you. Save the gas and live.

Light rope 1 at both ends. Light rope 2 at one end. Rope 1 will burn all the way in half an hour. At that point light the second end of rope 2. When both ends meet on the second rope, 45 minutes will have elapsed.

too bad counting it off in your head isn't exact. 1 onethousand, 2 onethousand. i dunno. bananas.

i say you take an identical rope and start burning it fifteen minutes after you start burning the other rope. maybe i'm just a retard.

the rope is supposed to burn for 60 minutes, right?

If you get another rope just like it, then it should burn in the same amount of time. i dont know what i'm talking about anymore. i am retarded. i think i'm doing something wrong or misreading the problem i am retarded malfunction malfunction malfunction

THe ropes still take 60 minutes each to burn completely. And there is no pattern to the rate of burn - i.e. one inch of rope does not burn in one second, et cetera.
