I know that IL2 came with missions that instructed you. PF probably does as well. In any case, I'd recommend first just learning to take off, then land, then attack friendly stationery objects like houses, etc.
The best lessons to learn are to do ground-attack missions before you try air-to-air. Even for a flight vet, the learning curve is high. Once you're confident in the air, try landing aircraft on carriers. That's hard as fuck. For the last test of airmanship, land a fast fighter (Corsair or Hellcat) on an escort carrier.

The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly. |

Even more fun is to get into an IL-2, spawn at 10,000m, and then shoot your tail off and fall all the way down.
Add bonus points if you use the VAP-100 incendiary ball dropper.
