I 100% agree with the OP. A minimap needs a lot of functionality and information. If you are worried about overloading it and confusing players not used to it, there is a very simple fix: Allow the players to set filters, just like with the large map at GDC.
( And the large map should also show a topographic map, and not just plain blue imho. ) |

Heh, BF3 is a good example of what direction not to take your franchise if you give a damn about gameplay quality.
Maybe PS2 will throw out the 3D spotting arrows seen in the GDC footage before launch as well. And keep spotting down to the minimap like BF2 and 2142. We can only hope, of course... |

*Sigh*
I do not want a minimap that's shows the current location of enemies. Show where they were last spotted sure, or show motion sensors flashing when they detect enemies nearby, or if in a aircraft the direction of enemy aircraft or laser designated targets for ease of use. But I do not want to know where an enemy is, and what direction he is looking at that exact second if no one can actually see them. It is pathetic, and removes some of the skill from the game. |

Isn't that rather the interlink benefit being crazy than the minimap?
Besides, I don't think we're getting any interlinks this time around. Last edited by Boomzor; 2012-03-24 at 01:05 PM. |

For some reason....
I really hope that there's a game that forces players to use actual land navigation skills in a game... It would be so tedious and not fun but for some reason I want to be required to shoot azymuths and triangulate my location using landmarks in the distance that are on the map. I know, I'm crazy. |

On a serious note, I HATE the battlefield 3 minimap! The colours just blend in together and combined with the neon green and orange markers, I have a hard time when enemies are clumped together to determine where the enemy is. I miss my 1942 map in a lot of the games I played that were on a larger scale. Last edited by Truemedic; 2012-03-25 at 12:23 AM. |

lol orgy of glow worms!
I honetly don't mind the 3D spotting, as long as it's not automatic, doesn't display when you can't clearly see the enemy and is subtle. I wouldn't mind if they were a little more subtle than they are currently... I think the Doritos in BF3 fit in quite well, because of the crazy TTK and how low the contrast between the players and the environment (lolbrown shooter). They really dumb the game down a bit, but also stop it from being as frustrating as operation flashpoint of similarly realistic games ;p |

Yes some people have more trouble than others with being either colourblind or poor vision or even newcomers to gaming, but as soon as a that one guy is 3D spotted in battlefield 3, EVERYONE in that area looks at it and starts firing at it, even if they cannot see it and I personally think that's just lame. There has to be a more creative method other than full time 3D spotting, because pressing a single button and being able to see an opponent where they go for the next 4-5 seconds even behind cover is too easy. Also just to note, with the size of planetside 2 imagine seeing 50 of those nice targets above their heads. My recommendation if they are going to keep that system is to have it so 3D spotting can only be seen within squads targeted by their squad members and not globally, this cuts down significantly on how much is on your screen and also allows for more precise targeting from your squad members and a squad leader can say: "Attack the Max with the symbol on the second floor behind the barrel". Its been made quite clear that gdc footage is nowhere near indicative of what they want and it should be taken for what it is - alpha footage. Though there's a huge thread dedicated to this discussion. Tapatalk. |
