Country.
Really? I think of music of religious zealotry, which kind of fits the Vanu's ideals, doesn't it?

Four seconds? That's not enough time to judge a song on its merits. That would be like listening to AC/DC's Thunderstruck for four seconds and then calling it lame because it's just some guy switching between two different notes for the entire four seconds, and nothing else.

Clearly we have country fans here. Country is the one music genre that I hate.

To be honest four seconds of the song is enough to make me think I will like it, then it kicks in and it's shite!

I think there are WAY too many people projecting their stigmas on the NC music. The NC are laborers; common clay people who are fighting for their liberties. The rock anthem fits them perfect ("Banjos" as Stew so inaccurately put it). People need to quit trying to compare real-world examples to the empires; it's not the same thing.

I don't understand the "this is the future" argument. Very likely people will look back in 200 years and go "WTF is techno?". The game may take place in the future, but we're playing it now and it's important for the themes to capture the feel of the empires individual ideals. The TR and NC do this, the only one that doesn't is the VS (imo).

As posted from other thread:

Speaking as NC...

I can tell that one of the goals of this project was to inject more variation between the factions, which I think is definitely the way to go. This also raises the bar in terms of both stretching the range of the composer and being able to capture the spirit of a large group of people that already have a preconceived notion of what their faction is about. No easy task. I will give you my thoughts on how accurately the music captured what I thought the factions were about.

VANU SOVEREIGNTY
Awesome; hit the nail on the head...Vanu music is exactly how I pictured it...modern theme with emphasis on them being 'the future'. Reminds me of science fiction/action movies; which is perfect imo. Futuristic and tech savvy.

TERRAN REPUBLIC
Orchestral, epic, with lots of brass instruments. The first two evoke feelings of nationalism, pride and honour, while the latter I think captures the idea of duty, service, and sacrifice. Embodies the core theme of Planetside quite well, and as such should be most similar to the Main theme of the game. Epic war movie FTW!

NEW CONGLOMERATE
I want to start off by saying 'the Don' captured *exactly* what he was going for in his approach with the NC. Having said that; I think he missed the mark in terms of capturing the feel of the faction. Here's why I think that...It's clear that he was going for the 'cool rebel' as a way of differentiating it from the TR (which ideologically they are the most similar to...also the reason they hate each other the most ). As was said previously in the thread, it conjures images of some badass dude off by himself smoking a cigar. The twang also conjures a hint of 'backwardness'...if not that, then at least a rural feeling of isolation. Also as previously stated in this thread, it does conjure up a corny image of "Snake" from "Escape From New York" and "Escape From LA".

My problem with this approach isn't that it's bad music, but it fundamentally goes the opposite direction of the ideology of Planetside, which is team play.

The badass off smoking a cigar in the desert 'plays by his own rules', and tends to be 'too cool' to put aside his ego to fight for freedom with his brothers in arms which is (in reality) what the New Conglomerate is about.

I can see the conversation Higby had with him even; the key word 'the Don' took away from it was Higby's use of the word "rebel", rather than "freedom".

This ideologically took the music of the NC towards individualism rather than unification against tyranny, and herein lies the paradox of the TR and the NC; "Is the idea of unity limited to the TR, or is it rather epitomized in the TR and common to all the factions"? I would say the latter.

I think this is the root of where the dissatisfaction with NC is coming from (amoung those who are actually dissatisfied at least!)

I have seen Higby's comment about the synth being dropped in the final product (a decision I like), though I suspect it will move it from the 'hillbilly' feel more towards something like the 'Guns n Roses' feel. Having said that, I'm pretty sure the vision of 'rebel' goes deeper than that, and I suspect the mood it conjures will still rub people the wrong way; being a team-based game at it's core.

Of course being a pragmatist, I understand that at this point it's probably too late to do much about that, so I'm just (really) hoping they get rid of the twang (please no twang!).

Don't let my faction bias bring you down though, overall this score is fantastic, and brings to light how much Don's work has influenced the culture of this game, which I fully expect to be vastly larger and more successful than the last.

True, but only because the robots will have destroyed the human race by then and the only humans that will be left will be dancing around a fire to the sound of a drum made out of a hollow log.

I actually have a similar notion, but I think that's the reason it works. Looking at the lore, the NC aren't a hugely unified empire. In fact, many of them are mistrusting of other NC. The unifying factor of the NC is that they want to pursue their individual freedoms, which not all of them exactly agree is the same thing. If they didn't HAVE to join together to defeat their mutual enemies, they would be the lone, cigar-smoking rebels.

"Twang" (which I don't really hear, but that may be because I'm from Missouri and grew up hearing country, bluegrass, etc.; so my idea of "twang" is probably much different than most everyone else) denotes that these are common people. This goes back to the first point, the NC are not a proper, unified army, they're a group of laborers and mercenaries who don't adhere to military doctrines or pointless authority; this is why a "heroic" military anthem wouldn't capture the feel of that the NC is about. They don't have the sense of national patriotism or the futuristic ideologies that the other empires have. They're rather anarchistic (I mean that in every good sense of the word). That said, they ARE very individualistic rebel types, that's what they're all about. I can understand why some people don't like the style of music, but what I don't understand is why people say it doesn't fit.

EDIT: I'd like to add that this is the very reason why people comparing the NC to "'murica", as some of you put it, doesn't make any sense. Quite the opposite, in fact; NC are probably more like insurgent rebels than american forces or ideals.

As far as the others, I can live with them. The TR fits perfectly. I still think the VS sounds little too much like a house mix than an empire theme, but I'll leave that judgement to the VS players.

Destroyed? More like BECOME the human race. Only a matter of time before the singularity hits...
