Re: PC Gamer UK December Issue & Interview with Higby on Scale

Just rushed* out and bought a copy from my local supermarket, fair few pretty pictures on the inside - some new, some not so - 1 appears to be a third-person chase cam from behind a mossie.

Fair few showing off NC troopers along with TR (no VS though =( )

Edit: The article confirms 6 infantry classes - Light Assault, Engineer, Heavy Assault and Medics are named along with MAXes.

*it was more like a light saunter really.

At one point during the demonstration, Higby shows us around one of Planetside 2′s “facilites”, city-like structures where combat takes place in individual “courtyards”. Higby indicates one of those spaces. “Just this area back here, this is the size of a Modern Warfare level,” he says, casually.

Quote of the year.

I think we are really going to notice the map size alot more in PS2 because in the original we really skipped over most of the terrain. The fights typically went from one SOI to the next SOI with the occasional bridge battle.

For PS2, with the land capture system they have hinted at, it sounds like we will be actually using much more of the map which should make it feel even larger.

I still don't like that every time Higby talks, the projected player numbers get smaller and smaller and smaller. Now, he's talking about 200 on 1 side which is basically just on par with PS2.

8x8 km seems small compared to the current planetside. That's about the size of a battle island. Perhaps the scale in PS2 is measured differently than PS1.

He gave an example of a situation someone may be in. he did not say it was a maximum.

The Size of an BI? Never, never never ever. How did you measure them anyway? :>

The Leza bridge on cyssor is about 600m long for comparison. 8km isn't that big in PS1.

8km = 5 miles
Imagining it takes about 7 minutes to run a mile, that's a 35 minute footslog across the width of a continent. As the crow (mosquito) flies.
I think that's about on par with the larger of the PS1 maps.

Most games are not at a 1:1 scale. Usually you travel much faster than normal.

WWIIOL was revolutionary in that it was a 1:2 scale. It took 5 hours in a Plane to cross the map. Planetside and other games are nowhere close to 1:2, much less 1:1

True, but in a conversation hyping the massive scale of PS2, don't you think he'd use the larger number of players they would expect? I don't think they will be able to pin down the actual max number of players until launch, but 200 is a far cry from the "thousands" that were mentioned at Fan Faire.

But most of the time when asked how big an area is in a game a developer when answering usually gives measurements in a terminology relevant to the person asking. I would think that when Higby is answering that question he literally means 8kmx8km and not "8kmx8km which is in our game where 10 feet equals a km".

I could be wrong mind you, but this is just something I would expect from devs if they want players to believe they are being honest and straight forward with information.
