Sometimes even on a futuristic battlefield it just comes down to a sharp piece of metal.

I think I'm a bit more agitated because I just read this great blog on Dust 514: http://www.dust514.com/en/news/?article=3427 At the bottom is a description of one of their knives:

"A close-quarters melee weapon, the nova knife is as deadly a weapon as anything on the battlefield. Its name derives from the heated plasma edge of the blade – formed by a thermic igniter and linear gravity condenser – that, in skilled hands, can be used to carve through even the thickest dropsuit armor."

THIS is how you design weapons in a sci-fi setting. I don't really care what that rationale is to use a knife on the battlefield, just don't give me a "really sharp knife" and call it a day. Please!
DUST 514 takes place in the eve universe which is 21,000 years in the future, since they have been lost since there wholehole collapsed from the milkyway, and they have been spread across in the EVE galexy so long that they lost all connection to earths date. The wornhole in EVE was open for many years allowing humans from earth to slowly colonize the entire EVE galaxy. This made for a much healthier, successful and advanced colonization. Planetside takes place on a recently lost colony that is much smaller, There wormhole collapsed in minutes after it opened leaving only 40k people and 50 or so ships on the other side,In fact the whole game takes place on one planet that is colonized as a new home for the survivors. The game is set in about 500 years from now. There for the technology would be much less advanced then EVE's and DUST 514, this included there knife technology. Although the discovery of a artificial alien world controlled by nanites could be a game changer I as a fellow futurist would prefer that they be conservative on future predictions of technology, that makes it more future realty and less fantasy.

I was thinking about how annoying I'm finding the fact that they're throwing empire logos on every single thing, but it just occurred to me that the pocket knife I've got in my pocket has a Leatherman logo on it. I guess they're not that bad.

it looks quite NCish.

a little tiny for my taste, but the design meets NC philosophy.

it´s not made to look good, it is made to inflict some heavy serious damage and this blade would be a real motherfucker in reallife.
you know this cut out shaft in the blade is not to reduce weight, it´s purpose is to let the victim bleed, even if the knife is not pulled out!
you know? insert a normal pocketknife blade into your leg and it wouldn´t start to bleed violently until you pull the knife out again so the blood has a nice open hole to go through. but if you use a knife with such a lovely bloodtrench, the blood can take this trench even when the blade is still in the leg.

i don´t think we will get throwable knifes, but a knife like that would make a perfekt combat throwing knife.

i wonder what the other knifes look like. hope the chainsaw is out because that would fit even better for NC and i would hate the tr having it ;-)

the vs will get a lightsabre for sure...

Agree, Knifes will be around for as long as man is around to wage war. Regardless of how advance weapons get. It truly is the perfect hand to hand combat weapon.

Also, I love the look of the Photoshopped NC magcutter without the handle.

The Magcutter definitely looks the role of NC; too bad we didn't get a chance to see the Chainblade during TR week - I'm thinking everyone would be happy with a close representation to this:

Knife Anatomy 8

"The center axis of the blade has a milled fuller or cannelure. The fuller or cannelure allows a reduced central weight in the thickest area of the spine without sacrificing strength. In essence, it forms an "I" beam running down the center of the blade, and limits lateral flexion. You will see this feature more on longer, larger blades, like sword blades."

"It is not a blood groove. The term blood groove is an American colloquialism and means nothing. We've all heard that the groove is made to allow blood to flow in a deep cut, but this is simply an uneducated attempt at describing the fuller. The fuller is named for the special hammer and anvil tool set (a fuller) used by a blacksmith to produce the groove that spreads hot iron. In my book I go into greater detail about this mysterious and misunderstood groove in a blade."

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't all PS knives more than simple knives?

The TR get a chainblade, a knife with a monomolecular chainsaw edge that can cut through all but the heaviest armor.

The NC get the Magcutter, a blade that can vibrate so fast it makes short work of all but the heaviest armor.

The VS get the Force-blade, a knife that creates a force edge around the blade that can cut through all but the heaviest of armor.

I admittedly put in the monomolecular edge part on the TR knife, but otherwise these knives seem pretty sci-fi to me.

Also, NC knife is as bland as always.

No it looks like they took all that away they are just regular knifes now. If fact when they posted the NC knife on face book they didn't even call it the Mag Cutter, they just called it 'A New Conglomerate close quarters combat weapon.'

OMGWTF!!!!

How exactly are they going to justify these knives killing anything but other infiltrators?
