In Planetside 1 your character was restricted to whatever empire you chose when creating him. You could create multiple characters on different factions, but, for example, if you played a VS character and wanted to log into a TR one, you would have to wait 8-12 hours.

When the game first came out it was one faction per server as well. They later changed this starting with only two empires then to three. Maybe they will follow a similar route in PS2.

You could just start playing as a VS and never have to worry about switching ;P
