Planetside encpuraged such team play mentality and so much time spent gibbering away to eah other on teamspeak that I think if you are were in a decent outfit it would be impossible not to form long lasting bonds with the others in it.
You often see in films about soldiers that "band of brothers" mentality. Whilst im not pretending that PS is anything like a real combat experience, so far its the closest most of us will ever get to experiencing it. My outfit started as a group of randoms who happened to be squadded on the day of release, the squad leader invited everyone to an outfit he was making called nordic assualt (he actually spelled it that way and we had to wait about a month for the CSR's to be able to correct his spelling). It wasn;t meant to be serious but we kept playing together, the numbers grew and whilst not everyone stayed, those at the core never left and are still good friends to this day (holding yearly meet ups as well). Once you spend a lot of time doing galaxy hotdrops, holding a cc/gen or rushing to resecure as a team, relying totally on your team mates to make things happen.. when they are always there for you and you can always rely on them.. it just makes you close to them. Much closer than in any other game ive played. Everyone in our outfit was advanced med+engineer, so you got used to them picking you up and dusting you off when you went down, you got used to one of them always being in the right place at the right time with the galaxy ready to load up, and you got used to hurling yourself out of that galaxy into the maelstrom below, with your buddies landing next to you. Its a unique experience. Last edited by SergeantNubins; 2012-06-30 at 05:33 AM. |

I have been friends with the core group of guys from LiquidForce since we created it in 2004. We we're a part of Digital Marines before that went south. The bond that was formed is similar to the bonds formed during wartime with soldiers in the trenches with each other. We could depend on one another to get the job done. It was a very tight knit community that I have only experienced one other time in my MMO experiences. Which was in WoW with a guild called Team B on Bloodhoof during the old honor system days trying for High Warlord. I got up to Lt. General before they took the system out.
It's also the outfit rivalries that were instilled into us all. To this day, we curse those speed hacking SoB's in the NC outfit Serious Gamers. You bastards can go to hell! |

Even after I stopped playing PS1 regularly, I went on to play alongside many of my PS1 friends in other games, like EVE Online.
Lets see: CDLHamma CDLPeacemaker CDLMarsman CDLBlack Sobekeus SecondRaven Rbstr xmodum xnerd QuakCow 1024 Sentrosi Everay EiinE Infernus Jaged Corrosion Chronosphere DHoff Shootx ShadowRhino ...and even Dharkbayne, though killing him was more my intent. I may have even forgotten a few. Some I played alongside in PS, some I just knew from this forum. Many have just kind of disappeared over the years, and I'd love to see their names pop back up again in PS2. Last edited by Electrofreak; 2012-06-30 at 10:34 PM. |

Yeh, mid 90s aswell for alot of my crew. Loads of real solid bonds are formed over the net, playing games 2getha and getting 2 know one another through teamspeak etc. My original Team fortress classic friends are still with me and we have played so many FPS games together as a team we are now really good as we all know eachother and how eachother plays inside and out which makes tactics very fluid and easy

I don't know if I'll be able to find a veteran outfit that can put up with me. Lul.
My old outfit, while some of us are still in communication, started to break apart after WoW. That game is a killer, I would never recommend it.

Well my outfit, Sturmgrenadier has gone far beyond the bond of gaming together. We have had several real life gatherings. We have many people that have become close friends. We have had many members, myself included, share very real, very emotional real life issues on our boards seeking advice.
It really has become a family. |

I've played on and off with the same group of people for a decade now. And before that i was with the same crew for 5 yrs. And it's odd, you hang with someone every day on line, then one day you don't.. and never see them again... or catch up years and years later. Planetside feeds outfit loyalty with faction loyalty and people are just crazy about it. Also it's such a friendly community it seems.

I don't think its unusual for guilds/outfits to stay together for a decade or more its not something special for planetside or anyother game .
You find likeminded people ,smash some faces together and bonds are formed its that simple. Last edited by Maarvy; 2012-07-02 at 12:52 PM. |
