Does it really matter that much what the full name is? We're gonna shorten it to Dy anyways. Nobody says "Mosquito" or "Liberator". I think the name is fine, and original. It will grow on us just like any other name.

Dyson is a properly sci-fi name. The Dyson sphere as other have brought up, among many things like the Dyson series (a quantum mechanics thing) and the Dyson transform.

Honestly though, without seeing artwork of it... it's hard to say the name doesn't fit. I think it is something different and could easily own the name Dyson within a few weeks of beta. It's like saying everyone with the name Daniel is a dickhead. Sure you may know 5 or 6 or ever 10 dickheads named Daniel, but it's just a name! I'm sure as soon as i meet a normal person named Daniel, it will totally take the edge off that connection.

The Vanu naming scheme used to be all space-based. But for the life of me I can't think of many good ones that are space-based. Supreme Commander does have a bunch of good ones that could be "borrowed", but so do a lot of RTSs, actually.
Any of the following are better than Dyson IMO: Shrike (a bird) Seraph Flare (space theme) Sprite (I like this name, but everybody will think of soda) |

The Dyson?
No. Magrider is one of the most perfect names in history. Thresher also. Dyson? How about an alternate name that doesn't suck the Gaboon. As in Gaboon Viper, a short, muscular snake with extremely deadly venom. Swift: fastest bird in level flight Reaper. Not Reaver. Related to threshing: reaping. Mamba Tornado Dart Scimitar Boomerang Dagger Stiletto Rusty-Bladed Broadaxe Wielded by Barbarians. Or not. Raptor Harpy Needle There are many choices. Dyson is not among them. Why not Smith, Jones, Wojohowitz, Reubenstein or other last names? Then where would it lead? To OTHER surname equipment? "Toss me some Davidsons! A whole squad of Johnsons are coming over the hill! Hey, and reload my Hendrix while we wait for the Washingtons to regroup and pick up gunners!" Yeah, no. |

I have a feeling that we will have similar threads for anything that has a new name. We all have our ideas for a "better" name.
