Cheaters using aim bots and pixel sniffers are going to be a problem in a true F2P model. SOE probably won't exercise the resources it takes to actually continually monitor and ban the level of cheating that will take place with free accounts and game.
Two words. "Damn Cheaters" |

I'm with most others on this one, though. I really think the game needs a box price/serial key. It doesn't have to be $60, maybe $30. F2P after that. That would dramatically cut down on all of the hackers while quickly replenishing the funds lost on the development of the game. Even though some may prefer it, I hate not paying for a good game. (Not sure how to explain it) but for me it just feels cheap. (not monetarily)

Check out this post made by SOE about cheating in DCUO:

While I applaud the written stance of SOE on cheating in there current F2P model for DCUO, the written word is only a part of the equation. Implementation, pro-active hunting, and effective results are the other part of the equation.
To add to that, geometry hacks, like a speed hack or a Z-axis hack, or teleporting are relatively easy to detect and punish the offenders. Pixel sniffing and other more subtle cheats that directly impact the viability and integrity of a twitch FPS are on a different level then geometry hacks. Step in the right direction, but my expectation with a true F2P game is that the ability to cheat until banned, and then create a new account, then rinse and repeat is going to be a serious problem until SOE gets a handle on the finer subtlety of the cheats you can expect to see. I am not going to promote the site by naming it, but I think those of us who have been around for a while and been fighting hackers and cheaters know what site and the ilk we are talking about. If cheating gets to the level that it did in Planetside 1 then Planetside 2 will fail faster than APB or whatever it is called. |

Plus the EQ suspensions is part 2 of putting people on notice. First was a public warning, now they suspend a substantial number they've caught cheating which is basically a second warning of "we told you, now the rest of you better stop now or you're next". You are absolutely right in that if cheating is rampant then the game will be dead faster than you can say Jackie Robinson, but more importantly the devs know this too. While eliminating all cheating is just as impossible as eliminating all crime, as long as they police it, it should be fine. |

What difference does it make? If there is no penalty for cheating or being banned. Then there is nothing to stop hackers period. An initial buy in price attached to creating a new account at least imposes some penalty. Every ban cost the hacker 50 bucks or whatever the price of the game is. With this F2P model every ban cost the hacker nothing. They will laugh at the ban an just make a new account to continue their fun. The fact it was a problem with PS1 free accounts and SOE hasn't learned from it is the worst sign. Everyone seems to be taking it on faith that SOE has found some really good way to deal with cheaters. When no game in history has that i'm aware of. They are banned but they return with new harder to detect hacks. And if its F2P they just return instantly. |
