The game is F2P (no box price), so there is nothing to preorder. Please use the other thread for expressing any panic or doom and gloom over the game having no box price.

Cheaters using aim bots and pixel sniffers are going to be a problem in a true F2P model. SOE probably won't exercise the resources it takes to actually continually monitor and ban the level of cheating that will take place with free accounts and game.

Two words. "Damn Cheaters"

NO

I will not play PS2 if it is only available on Steam. Impulse, okay. Steam is not optional.

I'm with most others on this one, though. I really think the game needs a box price/serial key. It doesn't have to be $60, maybe $30. F2P after that. That would dramatically cut down on all of the hackers while quickly replenishing the funds lost on the development of the game. Even though some may prefer it, I hate not paying for a good game. (Not sure how to explain it) but for me it just feels cheap. (not monetarily)

Should maybe add a little to the title of this thread, is a little bit miss leading.

Check out this post made by SOE about cheating in DCUO:

FROM: Cheating?

If you’re not playing by the rules, know that the fun you’ve had at the expense of our skilled players is coming to an end. We are in the process of actively and aggressively pursuing those you using third party software to cheat. We will track and find you, it’s only a matter of time. If you are casually trying out a “speedhack” or other cheat, I would strongly suggest you return to your regularly scheduled program now. There will be no future amnesty as we take the impact of this and its effects on our true players very seriously. If this is a way of life for you, I suggest you find another place to live.

Heroes and Villains of Metropolis and Gotham, you too can help us end this blight. As we grow our tools to track and end this, you can do your part of cleaning up the streets by reporting suspected cheaters, hackers and other miscreants using the procedure outlined below.

1. Go here: https://soe-ing.custhelp.com/app/ask/
2. Set Product to “DC Universe Online” or ““DC Universe Online PS3” , and the Category to “[DCUO] Community Standards”
3. Enter your Server (this should now be way easier!) and Character Name.
4. Enter the Subject as “Cheating”.
5. Enter as much information as you can in the Question field. In particular, location, player name, behavior witnessed. Be specific, saying someone is “cheating” or “speed hacking” is not as useful as reporting the specific actions they took that led you to this conclusion. There is no need to attach files. Please reference the “/Report” feature if you have used it to report the same incident.

It does work, but it’s not the only tool in our arsenal. Just know that we are listening, we are watching, and we are everywhere. Have a nice day.

-manderson and the DCUO team

While I applaud the written stance of SOE on cheating in there current F2P model for DCUO, the written word is only a part of the equation. Implementation, pro-active hunting, and effective results are the other part of the equation.

To add to that, geometry hacks, like a speed hack or a Z-axis hack, or teleporting are relatively easy to detect and punish the offenders. Pixel sniffing and other more subtle cheats that directly impact the viability and integrity of a twitch FPS are on a different level then geometry hacks.

Step in the right direction, but my expectation with a true F2P game is that the ability to cheat until banned, and then create a new account, then rinse and repeat is going to be a serious problem until SOE gets a handle on the finer subtlety of the cheats you can expect to see.

I am not going to promote the site by naming it, but I think those of us who have been around for a while and been fighting hackers and cheaters know what site and the ilk we are talking about.

I just read this short article about 700 EQ1 users being suspended for hacking. So this is what SOE looks like finally cracking down... I like! Clearly EQ1 is just the start, lets say it's their "test" to soon migrate on their larger, more current titles.

They said something similar when the cheating started in Planetside. How did they fix it? They disabled the free trials because they couldnt fix the problem.

If cheating gets to the level that it did in Planetside 1 then Planetside 2 will fail faster than APB or whatever it is called.

PS1 wasn't built on a F2P model.

First wave of EQ1 suspensions is more current than Planetside Reserves program, so in this situation I think the more current data is more accurate.

Plus the EQ suspensions is part 2 of putting people on notice. First was a public warning, now they suspend a substantial number they've caught cheating which is basically a second warning of "we told you, now the rest of you better stop now or you're next".

You are absolutely right in that if cheating is rampant then the game will be dead faster than you can say Jackie Robinson, but more importantly the devs know this too. While eliminating all cheating is just as impossible as eliminating all crime, as long as they police it, it should be fine.

What difference does it make? If there is no penalty for cheating or being banned. Then there is nothing to stop hackers period. An initial buy in price attached to creating a new account at least imposes some penalty. Every ban cost the hacker 50 bucks or whatever the price of the game is. With this F2P model every ban cost the hacker nothing. They will laugh at the ban an just make a new account to continue their fun.

The fact it was a problem with PS1 free accounts and SOE hasn't learned from it is the worst sign. Everyone seems to be taking it on faith that SOE has found some really good way to deal with cheaters. When no game in history has that i'm aware of. They are banned but they return with new harder to detect hacks. And if its F2P they just return instantly.
