Re: DirectX 9

Its really not a question of whether or not to support direct x9... if you're card only supports dx9 you're most likely not going to be running this game very well to begin with if at all. If you're using dx9 simply because you can't find windows 7, get a friend in college to get you a copy, it was like 15 bucks for me.

Edit: Stop holding back the advancement of games because you're too poor to "find" or work for a copy of windows 7.

If you're still on XP, I don't know how you expect to be able to keep playing new games. As said above, find a friend that's in college to pick you up a copy, it's really not very expensive!

Terrible suggestion imo. (I think Win 8 sucks.)

The equation is not as simple as this. The game is expected to have at least a 5 year life cycle and is free 2 play. The projections won't be against the expected systems of launch but the expected average systems of that 5 year cycle. Those within that 20% that are attracted to the game will play the game later down the road within the game's lifecycle when they've got the system to play it.

Unfortunately for you, they need to drop DX9 so they can drop those old libraries and focus on improving the engine to work with modern hardware. DX10 hardware started coming out in 2006, it's over 6 years old.

If they are going for computers that are 4-5 years old, then DX10 is kind of that standard requirement.

Re: DirectX 9

i really didn't want to start any arguments here, and i hope we can all understand each other. i certainly get the fact that dx9 and winXP are on the way out, and the advancements made by dx10/11 are significant and, to be honest, needed if PS2 is going to be the blockbuster it should be.
i'm not saying that XP users are behind the times and should 'upgrade or GTFO', what i'm saying is that it's not really fair to everyone else to force the release of a product that isn't EVERYTHING it COULD and SHOULD be. i wish somehow XP could properly support DX10 and higher - i don't like dealing with microsoft on principle, TBH, and them forcing it onto people in order to play anything recent stinks of money-grabbing-asshattery - but i can't make anything happen, and MS isn't exactly going to listen to people when money keeps whispering sweet nothings into their ears.

i never thought of asking someone in college for a copy of win7, that's a good idea (if i had any college buddies D: ) but i'm sure i'll find some way of getting my PC up to spec. Because really, the most important question anyone has to ask is...

IS PLANETSIDE 2 GOING TO BE WORTH IT?

and we ALL know the answer to that.

Im sorry eclipse but playing on computers is a expensive hobby. If you dont have the money to keep up consoles would likely be a better investment.

Eclipse, if you need some help on a comp build just give us a ballpark figure and tell us what you have that can be stripped off your old computer.

why hasn't SOE answered this question yet? They've already said a dual core is min and i Would think knowing if this game is going to support DX9 is way more important than knowing the marketing info they'v released.

Yes, because spending $200+ for a console and $50+ for games is cheaper than having an old computer you upgrade with parts given to you for free by friends who don't need them anymore, and playing -free- games on the internet.

i'm not trying to start any arguments here, i'm just saying that consoles can be pretty darn pricey too if you want to keep up with the latest greatest games. i like the PC because you don't -have- to pay -anything- to play neat games (except for internet bills, ugh) because i can choose to only play F2P games. Like PS2 is going to be. Yay!

On another note, i've actually very recently come into some new parts for my old clunker, including a dual-core processor, a brand new MB and some better RAM. i'll have to wait until i've finished rebuilding it to know exactly what the specs are and thus what i'm going to need to buy, but i honestly, really do appreciate the constructive criticism, support and offers of help you guys are giving. It's a very pleasant surprise.

In general its cheaper owning a console then upgrading a computer. Especially with how long the current console generation has lasted. You cannot deny that fact. That is nice you have friends that do that for you, but the majority of people do not. There is good sales out there too for console games you just have to look for them.

Re: DirectX 9

i know that in general it is considered cheaper to be a console gamer, and this cycle has lasted quite a while... i am also fully aware of the great deals you can get on older games and systems if you wait patiently and get a good look around.

I wasn't trying to be antagonistic, just a little light-hearted sarcasm, and you also cannot deny the fact that there are very few completely free games for consoles. (Or emulators. Woo!)

We are getting a little off-topic with this though. As Yutty rightly said, it would be nice to get an official ruling on this topic, if only so that we have long enough to prepare, and upgrade if necessary. All everyone here wants to do is play the game, one way or another. It would be useful to know whether our computers are up to the task -before- we try to log into beta.

Free 2 Play= For Poor People...they want as much people to play it.

specially when is a game like planetside which isn't that known.

IMO Planetside 2 being able to be played in old rigs is gonna be the #1 job of SOE IMO....Yeah I think they will focus more on that than anything else.
