Revised edition here, with ending. Enjoy!

Michael Priest Logan cautiously peeked over the ridge of the hill upon the advice of his XO. What he saw confirmed the readings that Tuef had been getting on his personal radar. The New Conglomerate soldiers, roughly fifty yards away at the end of the depression, were patrolling the perimeter to what looked like a small concrete bunker. The intel that Zulu Nine had given him indicated that two of the top NC generals were conducting a meeting in that very building. And the guards corroborated the information. It wasnt every day that a person saw a dozen powered MAX armors circling a building . . . let alone three dozen. Well, three dozen and change.

Priest slowly raised the barrel of his bolt-driver sniper rifle, bringing its powerful scope to his eyes. Each of the three MAX formations had an attach of infantry in a mixture of agile and reinforced armors, he saw. He thumbed a button on the side of the stock, and instantly the image magnified itself greater. He was looking for . . . yes, he found it. It seemed as if the soldiers in the agile armor were squinting into the distance. That would rule out a covert strike, as those soldiers were equipped with darklight vision implants. The implants would allow the user to see the cloaked Infiltration suits that covert-ops units so often employed, but they also limited the range of which a person could see effectively. Thus, those sentries always looked like they were trying to see something just outside their vision.

Satisfied that he had all that would be needed to coordinate the assault, Priest edged back down the hill to where the rest of his unit was waiting. On a secure COM channel, he passed along the tactical information.
Fifty-five of them, and twenty of us? Tuef asked. Seems like poor odds for the anarchists!

The other eight members of his squad agreed, giving each other nods in the midst of performing a final weapons check. They knew that it would only be a matter of minutes now before they finally got to see some action again, and the orders were already being handed out. Once action was initiated, each member of the squad would perform his or her prescribed function, with the hallmark efficiency that made the 2nd Battalion the elite unit that it was.

Priest opened up another COMM channel. Outbound Wing, this is Mobile Forward Command, you reading Outbound Wing?

A hiss of static was all that was heard for several seconds before the reply came through. Reading you loud and clear, Command! What do we need to know?

Outbound, be advised that there are thirty-six, I repeat, three-six NC MAX armors. All ground pounders and low-cals, though, nothing that should clip your wings. Stand-to, Outbound. Say again, stand-to.

Roge-o, Command, we are at attention and ready with the carpet.

Affirmative, wait one.

Priest turned back to his team, who had also been listening into conversation. He gave them one last appraising look. Some grasped their weapons tightly, and a few shifted back and forth, but their eyes told the complete story. The eyes showed nothing but readiness. They were anxious to leap over the hill and get the job done. He gave Tuef the thumbs up, and led the squad up to the crest of the hill, where they waited on their stomachs.

Outbound, this is Command, roll the carpet.

This time there was no verbal response from Outbound flight. There did not need to be. The visual response was satisfying enough. Upon his last command, ten Terran Republic Reavers crested the hill opposite the valley from where he and his squad lay. Priests timing had been perfect, the order to roll the carpet was given when all three sets of MAXs were patrolling in the opposite direction. They would never know what hit them.

All ten Reavers let loose their rocket salvos with impeccable precision and coordination. Explosions pounded into all three of the NC formations, drowning out the expected screams of agony. The resulting confusion was all the members of Priests squad needed. They came barreling over the hill with weapons raised, moving to their assigned objectives. Defcon and Rotou, Priests two resident heavy-weapons specialists fanned out, assisting the Reavers in the cleanup operation as Priest, Tuef, and the rest set a bee-line for the building.

Tuef, how do you feel about knocking on the door for us? Priest asked his XO with a wink.

Roge-o boss. Softly or loudly? Tuef joked, pulling out his C12 and setting to his task. His Fire in the hole! warning came, prompting a similar explosion to the ones that had been delivered earlier, care of the Outbound pilots.

Matt, one of Priests standard assault soldiers on loan to him from the Alpha One Destroyers barreled into the newfound opening, flinging a concussion grenade ahead of him. Unlike fragmentation grenades which shoot shrapnel out in all directions from the explosion, concussion grenades emit a wave of hyper-dense air, usually resulting in live bodies scattered about the room instead of dead ones. The explosion of this particular grenade rocked the inside of the bunker, sending desks, chairs, lamps, and anything else not nailed downincluding human bodiesslamming against the concrete inside walls. His call of Clear! came only seconds later.

Priest waited patiently with his XO while waiting for the rest of the assault squad to police the bodies and ammunitions. While waiting, both officers took a moment to look over the carnage that their squad had brought about. Priest counted fifty-four bodies strewn across the now-quite battlefield.

Tuef, correct me if I am wrong, but didnt I report that there were fifty-five neechees before the battle began? Priest didnt like the possibility of an enemy soldier running to tell his other superiors what had happened on this day. The 2nd Battalion was known for several things. Discipline, honor, and results of course. Perfection is what set them apart from every other outfit in the Terran Republics MEF. Their motto, tattooed on each members right forearm bears an ongoing testament to this: bright, blood-red letters, 2nd to none!

Yes, sir, I think you mean him sir. Tuef replied with a smile, pointing into the upper branches of a tall oak-like tree nearby. Barely distinguishable through the leaves were the blue and yellow colors of a uniform, wrapped firmly around a tree limb.

Commander! Matt called out as he came walking across the yard from a new arrangement of bodies that had found their way to the sunlight. Sir, both generals and their staff are accounted for. Our count is nine alive, one dead sir. Apparently he was standing in between the wall and a desk when the concussion grenade went off. You can find both halves over there if you want to take a look sir.

That will do Sergeant. Great work getting in there and disabling the neechees before they could do the job themselves. Your performance will be mentioned in my report to Spartan.

The problem with the current war was casualties. They simply didnt matter anymore. With the discovering of the Matrixing technology, mankind no longer had to fear death. When a soldier was killed in the field, it was only moments before his bodies was reformed back at their base of operations, ready to head back out and deal violence. As a result, the idea of a POW had simply ceased to exist. Why be taken prisoner when you could simply shoot yourself in the head and be back home within minutes? That made Matts work even more impressive, Priest noted. He had acted with such speed that both of the generals were alive and at their mercy.

Thank you sir, just doing my duty though. You know, were second to none!

Hoorah soldier Priest replied and smiled, set into motion the things that would wrap up the mission.

Base this is forward command. Operation: Merciless Ghost is condition green and we are requesting pickup! We have the package. I repeat, we have the package.

Forward command, this is Base. We are dispatching your ride as we speak. Congratulations on a job well done. Be advised that you have a meeting with the BNCO upon touchdown. Base out.

Priest grimaced. All the soldiers in the battalion liked their commander, but no one wanted to talk to Prudential after a successful operation. It meant paperwork and endless questions instead of celebrating with your soldiers. Well, such is the life of a squad leader.

Pack it all up boys and girls, were heading home!

444,444 And I've got a story

We drove past an enemy tank with the machine guns blazing. A mosquito crashed to the left as we hit a bump that sent us a few feet in the air. I quickly chose a target, a reaver that was headed our way. I pulled the trigger and the reaver started coming down. It landed on a group of enemy soldiers. We fired left and right killing the terrans. We hit a rock and the jeep flipped on its side. I got out and helped my driver out. The driver's name was Jesse. He was a good friend of mine. He sat behind the wrecked vehicle catching his breath. I too breathing heavily threw a few grenades from behind the jeep. A New Conglomerate Deliverer had just unloaded some troops nearby and we ran over to it. It wasn't moving so I assumed it was empty, but we checked the driver seat anyway. As we looked through the window we noticed something wrong, there was a hole in his head. I climbed into the passenger seat and sat there looking at the hole in his head. Jesse walked around to the driver seat. We looked at his dogtags and carried him to the back. As I looked at him I wondered what happened. None of the windows were broken, there wasn't even a scratch on the deliverer. I walked back to the passenger seat and Jesse took the wheel. We approached our base at dusk. It felt like we were in a ghost town. I saw dead bodies everywhere. Jesse was about to get out, but I said, "I don't think we should go out there. It doesn't look very safe and it's just us." He agreed and we drove toward another base of ours when we got there we were greeted by the commanders. I asked what happened and they told me they were ambushed. He told me that he wasn't sure if they took the base or not. The terrans had come from all over.

I wondered what had happened to the driver for a while then went to bed.

The next morning I took the dead man in the deliverer to the respawn tubes. I inserted a little DNA and he started reforming. When he awoke he looked at me and asked what happened. I told him how we found him and then asked his name. "My name is Cablekid. I am in the 603rd Infantry Division." We walked over to his body and he examined it. Neither of us had any idea what had happened. We walked over to the commanders'building and told us we were going on a mission to retake gamma base, the base which had been attacked. He couldn't give us a good supply of information but he could tell us something. "Sorry, intelligence couldn't find anything. You're on your own." So I gathered some of our best men. Seargent Feichtmeir, MAX armor and sniper skills. Private First Class Landa, a mosquito pilot. Jesse, Cablekid, and some grunts. We divided into two sunderers. I could see explosions off in the distance where the battle was happening yesterday. When we arrived at the base everyone jumped out and I was yelling orders every few seconds. I told them a little about what had happened and then we went inside. On the left wall there was a message written in blood. It read Death is near. We looked at it for a few seconds and then moved on we kept seeing similar phrases. We finnally got to the hallway that lead to the command console. Written on the door was the phrase Death lies behind this door. I told Cablekid to hack the door and he hacked it with pleasure. When the door opened we saw blood all over the floor... but this wasn't the Command Console room. Terrans were lying all over the ground... all facing the door...

Plus, beta ends in 23 days, so that just supports my viewpoint more. I know this is flamebait, but I don't care as I wont be checking this thread again.
