Steel series or bust i say. MX518 has 2 side buttons and if you don't have something equal or equivalent to that then you must be using a $5 microsoft mouse, not designed for gaming. |

A 5 mouse button (you can get em very cheap) is what I see as bare minimum for gaming nowadays. That 5 includes scroll wheel, btw. Well, bare minimum is maybe a wrong word. I also see anything more than 5 a bit overkill in most cases. I've yet to really see a mouse that pulls off more than 5 buttons in a very convenient way. Most buttons become too awkward to use well.
As said, MX518 is still one of the best price/performance ratio mouses for gaming out there. They arnt even expensive, but you don't really even realize what you are missing out on if you are playing any real game without side buttons Those are one of the best buttons you can even have at your disposal. The point is, if you spend even a few hours of the week playing games, I'd get a 5 button mouse.

Interesting choices.
Personally for me, mouse 4 (I think, the one closer to my body anyways) is usually a VoiP button and mouse 5 is often some kind of "open door/use/activate" button. In my main game, APB, mouse 5 switches the shoulder of the weapon. It's a third person shooter, so switching the cameras (and thus the weapons) shoulder makes a huge difference and is required for any player who wants to be decent. In WoW I had mouse 4 & 5 for abilities, though.

I am still using the mouse that came with my PC. It's some sort of HP mouse, 2 button w/wheel. I don't know, I've never felt that I've ever needed any more than that. I still have the ability to absolutely rape people in FPS games with it. It would feel weird for me to click a button on the side to reload instead of hitting 'R'.

Not as bad as some: I know there is a Razer mouse that has NINE thumb buttons, geared toward RPGs. It's so confusing it comes with "training" stickers to train yourself haha. Last edited by Quovatis; 2011-12-22 at 05:17 PM. |

The n52te for example, which I use. All movement can be done with left thumb, that is usually wasted for spacebar only. It's pure win especially for MMORPGs, but I play all games with it: Nowadays sold as the Razer Nostromo, as well.

yeah, I've looked at those, but seems too inconvenient if you actually want to quickly type a message to someone. You have to move both hands to a totally separate device on an already cluttered desktop. If they could incorporate the same features into a standard keyboard, I'd be all over it.

Gogo Razer, combine Nostromo with a normal keyboard! I havn't found it inconvenient at all, except when there isn't enough desk space to have both side by side. Then it gets inconvenient cos you either have you write in a very uncomfy position or keep switching their places. I personally will probably never go back to playing on a keyboard. When this one breaks (some 3-4 years old now), I'll get the newer version Razer Nostromo.
