phew. this topic just got long. and I'm not really getting it for self defense. otherwise yea, I probally would get a 9mm. My friend carries around a glock and I love it. Its a great gun to shoot. this is more for fun/hobby. there are plenty of other pistols I would prefer but they're not as cheap as this one.

Wrong.

Glock > Walther

Although I am partial to big pistols- my hands are massive and I have fat fingers. I can't operate some types of cell phone. So if I could somehow manage to stuff it in somewhere, I'd carry a USP.

For the record in the state of Florida:

1. In order to use lethal force (it doesn't matter whether you're using a .50AE round, or a .22LR, a firearm is considered a lethal weapon) you have to believe that you are in imminent danger of death or bodily harm, and you have to have no means of retreat from the threat. There is no duty to retreat in your home or place of business (the Castle Doctrine)

2. When it comes for self defense, again, at least in FL, caliber size has no bearing on 'excessive force' because a firearm is a lethal weapon. So the advice is to use the largest caliber you can handle comfertably. For those folks like me, who don't have the money to buy 2 different guns, one for plinking and one for protection, a .40S&W is a good compromise. .40 Hydrashoks WILL take someone down, and you can pickup a box of 100 rounds of 165grain FMJs for plinking at Walmart for $16, vs $12 for a box of 100 9mm's. There's a reason why the .40S&W is quickly becoming the preferred caliber for cops.

3. In response to what Triggar said concerning the hypothetical rapist situation:

A. Again, you have to be in fear of death or great bodily harm before you can employ lethal force.
B. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RETREAT IN YOUR HOME
C. Generally speaking, the person needs to be advancing upon you, and a threat somehow has been made (If you pull a gun on the guy, and he keeps advancing, thats usually interpreted as a threat)
D. When you take a CCW course, they teach to shoot for center body mass for a reason. Easiest to hit, and in a situation like that, you're probably not going to have time to aim for an arm. You are in fear of your life, i.e. if you do not take action, you could die. You aim your weapon, and fire at the perpetrator. Once he hits the ground, thats it, your not supposed to 'finish' him off or anything, you fire until the threat is neutralized. If he dies from his wounds, oh well. If he recovers, thats ok too, as far as the law is concerned. The idea of justified lethal force is that you are to incapacitate your attacker.
E. In the case of say, someone breaking into Triggar's house, and shes home alone, lets say that the goblin advances upon her, and she pulls her weapon, lines up her sights, and says "get out of my house". He is, at least to visible inspection, unarmed. If he advances, Triggar can shoot him. There are folks who say that the attacker has to have the means for you to shoot - well, you see a 5-11" guys (not very tall) advancing upon a short girl like her, no DA would even be willing to think about prosecuting. That's the entire point of having a firearm - its the great equalizer. I don't care how big, how fast, how strong you air, I can still put a round in you, no matter my size.

Wooo, ok done.

Well- until I have kids in the household, and because I get to take my SAR with me once I become of legal age, that will be my home defense weapon. Someone breaks a window, a long arm is more "intimidating" than a barely-visible pistol.

Once youngsters pop out, I'll get a safe.

Good idea, a shotgun is the best thing. Problem is, FL is not an open carry state, so if you LEAVE the house, gotta conceal. I don't recommend wearing trenchcoats to hide a rifle in during the summer, so pistols are good

But aren't there bears outside?

I kid- that's why God invented the shorty AK. I'll just cut off some unnecessary parts like the butt assembly, barre- fuckit, I'll somehow manage to hide a USP.

if you were a big poncho Im sure you could conceal a shotgun (maybe 2 or 3) pretty easily.

I plan on buying a pistol when I turn 18 (if possible) and getting a license for concealment. not just for protection, but to freak out my mom.
