Mechanically the game might as well be a decade old. That's just how I feel. Alot of people love the combat.
I can agree with that. It gets a bit annoying using melee class for that solely. At least it can make some sense with caster type classes.

Yeah, well, I can agree with ya there. So you're leaning more towards wanting something in the way of utilizing twitch game-play in a MMORPG then right? Would be neat to see however not sure it will be done. At least not by a big game developer at first. Seems like it would be niche and the masses wouldn't want to try and learn how to play hence the reason why a big developer wouldn't want to take a chance at doing it...

Be it twitch or something more then hitting 1111111111111111111111 to kill a enemy would be nice.

I'd like to know more about what you think. Seriously. And this isn't from a professional standpoint or a desire to make the game better - I'd honestly like to know. Without sounding snarky, there aren't very many systems that are better than this. I can't really put it into words... like, I wish I didn't have to drive my car but it's the most advanced method to-date, short of hiring a chauffer (which isn't cost-effective).

The attack/combo system of SOE's DC Universe is pretty fun.

So back in the day when PlanetSide was a big deal EA contacted me to come check out Ultima X Online (I think it was called). They had this massive shindig and people flown in from all around the country to check out the game.

Anyway - it was going to be an MMO and instead of mashing 1-0 on your keyboard you actually used your mouse to strike the enemy and take swings. It was a different take on the MMO combat system and it was quite fun.

The game was ultimately shitcanned for some reason..

I can't wait till the typical MMO mold is broken in terms of combat, someday it will happen.

I am looking for something akin to what Hamma mentioned. That would help using melee type chars anyway. More control.

That's true. I recently played DCUO and was surprised to see this. One of the abilities I got was not a hot-button key on my shortcut bar. I actually had either click once then hold the mouse button down or double-click then hold the mouse button down.

Even if they did something as simple as make the healthbars slide instead of inch, it would promote the illusion of a smoother combat. Doing a manual auto-attack makes the game feel choppy and very punishing if you try to use a fun skill that requires energy or rage but you keep spamming 3 or 5 instead of 1 and you've stood there for 3 seconds doing nothing. I'd also want the abilities that have effects(dot, knockdown, stun, simply more damage than 1) to be a bit more exagerated. If you're going to have a decade old system of combat atleast make it glamorous and neat to watch.

On the mechanics itself there's not much you can do but build an illusion to something better.

I'd prefer to have something where if I used certain abilities in a row it would create an interesting combo. Provide the players with something to do in combat besides chip away at their enemy's health.

Age of Conan had a combo kind of attack within the game.
Too bad the rest of the game was infested with so many bugs that the EPA had to be called in to clean it.

The problem with a melee system such as the one Hamma explained is that it would be easy to exploit.

I'd really like to see the mechanics of Skyrim/Oblivion in more MMOs.

One day health bars could be replaced with damaged character models. How do I know he's almost dead? He's missing a toe, ear, leaking half his blood, and is charging at me with an axe.
