If that was an obvious thing then why the fuck is everyone arguing about whether the base walls are still there. The whole thing was set up for the gdc, so the walls are gone.

I tweeted higby about it and he said
@mhigby Hey, in the demo the amp station didn't seem to have walls in game or on the map; what's the deal with that?

Also during the demo Higby says that the shields were turned off across the entire base in order to speed the game play up. |

It's a massive shame to me that folks are regarding this as anything but cool. These bases are no longer 4 walls 2 gates. You all twist and moan about how dull PS1 bases where, then drag this little number up. The bases are clearly 1000000 times more detailed than the original. And as stated in the "many videos on the net" they have been hand crafted and designed with most modern FPS map design techniques, creating nothing but a beautiful place to fight. I heard a rumor from someone who plays Dust 514 with a person who reads the Dust514-Universe forum, the little known sworn enemy of the Planetside-Universe forum.
They said that Higby was bribed with large amounts donuts & coffee to remove the base walls just for the GDC demo with the sole purpose of baiting someone on the Planetside-Universe forums to create a conspiracy thread about the previously mentioned missing base walls. Ok lets get something strait here, I will make a habit of whatever I like, when I like and however I like. Until Hamma smites me within an inch of my life I will do as I have done since my first post. Okay?.... The pictures are from the video, it seems the OP pictures where taken a little premature or at a perfect point to not catch the walls, or he did not watch the video correctly. It seems we have walls as further up the hill we can clearly see them, but we are missing a bridge: (that's why I asked if he had watched my video)........................... and to spam you all with the link. Bridge can be seen in the mini map.

Simmer down there Morto, no need to be all uptight.
Good observation on the minimap showing the walls that are missing (possible bug to any PS devs lurking on this thread). To provide my feedback it seems odd to have a base with some portions walled and others not. It looks like a base still under construction. It would be cool however if those missing pieces of the walls were upgradable in some way, along with turrets and other defenses. If that's the bare minimum base we see I think that could work out. Could open the door to a quasi-destructible environment. Being able to bust down some of the walls could make for interesting gameplay and be a nudge in the destructible environment direction. |

I really hope they don't go with a Starship Troopers route with anything in this game.
12ft walls for defense against bugs that fly. Zero armor against 10ft tall bugs, Zero mechanization or air support against giant bugs. Zerg of unarmored infantry fighting 10 feet from giant bugs that can cut a guy in half with one swipe. Walls are a must for defense of a base. Period. They have been doing it for centuries. When no walls were available, armies would build them before they went to sleep for the night. To think that walls are ok to leave out seems like the wrong path to take to the awesomeness that PS2 should be. Luckily we already have confirmation that they are indeed in the game, just left out for during testing/rework. Hopefully they are not wide open when they are done. |
