Last night, at around midnight, my computer froze up.
So I restarted it. Instead of the neat WinXP flash screen, I got Windows98..... not good. Then I got a DOS Prompt.... even worse.... okay... C:\dir "That drive is corrupt could not perform operation" It didn't take me long to realize... my HD had failed. Somehow, Windows died, hard. So this morning I formatted my hard drive, and am in the process of once again, rebuiling my system... This was either a hack, a virus(I had been noticing some slowing of late, but I couldn't finger it ya know), or just about the damndest crash I have ever seen windows make while running. I hadn't reset the thing or nothing.

Oh thats interesting....I don't think it was a hack tho....
My friends HDD did something similar once too, he had to format, sometimes it happens cause the HDD's get dodgy, sometimes data just currupts, but you knwo, this is windows so.... Oh well, bad luck I guess |

Did you upgrade from Win98? If not that's one hella crash....Never heard of it reverting back to an old 16 bit OS.

My computer has had a virus for about two months now. Didn't do much, but I knew about it. So a few days ago, my computer was fucked enough for me to stoop to Kazaaing Norton and running that (I'm not paying for that piece of shit). Found 64,000+ infected files all by the same virus (red ah or something like that, and all Kazaa files were clean. HA!). And it fixed all of four of them. It then "quarantined" (I think that does nothing) 60,000 of them and had to delete the rest. And my computer is still fucked, it said at the end of six hours of this "unable to remove virus". I just know it's going to kill my computer. But anyways, it was probably a virus.
Oh yeah, '98 was a hell of a lot more stable than 2000 and up. With this shit you click on an icon wrong and the thing crashes. May be a blessing in disgiuse. Never had problems with programs before. Bill Gates is really pissing me off right now. |

Yeah, if you're using 'modern' software and hardware in your PC, WinXP works great. It's when you have to regress that XP will bog down on you.
Wish there was a reliable DOS emulator for XP.

I think computers are rebelling all over the world..
In the past 2 weeks I have had to reformat 4 times (including the whole windows/drivers reinstall stuff) All in all I've become quite good at installing windows and reformatting o No idea why it's been doing that...after that many reformats there must be a hardware problem somewhere or something..

However, I have heard of shit like this happening once or twice before. Apparently there is some kind of problem in upgrading from 98 to XP, due to the fact that small bits of 98 remain (in case you ever want to regress back to 98 for some godforsaken reason.) Very rarely the computer will go on a bender and regress on its own (or do other random bizzare things.) If you can, Vic, get a true XP install on there. It'll prevent this sort of thing from happening. (Expensive as hell, I know, but it's the only way to be sure.) |
