I have a friend who uses 56k. Its not bad at all, (and we are in australia!)
The biggest contributer to lag is the computer, esp. Memory.

Those aren't too bad at all, although it's more than I would pay for it. Does it come with a monitor? If so see if you can get rid of it unless you need a new one badly. I run the game off of a 2.7 256 w/ cable and it can get laggy, so I would agree with those who say the biggest contributor to lag is low memory. I'm looking into a new computer and I'm not accepting anything less than 512, I might even get a whole gig if I can find a good deal. Focus on Memory first, then your graphics card (64MB min, I'd recommend a 128, though), then processor speed (anything 1.5gig and up is fine), and THEN connection.

I'm on a 56k. You won't lag in sanc or in smaller battles much at all. Unless you have a gig of RAM you'll get lag when doors open and it's loading new environments, but it's tolerable. In medium battles if you play your cards right the game is still playable, you'll quickly learn what things you can do and not have your gameplay suffer.
If you get caught in a big battle then frustration will be redefined for you. You'll spawn and get to sit at an equipment term for over a minute waiting for your window to come up. Then you'll try to run like hell away from the battle and curse the world if somebody picks you off before you can get far enough away. You will never see the person who kills you most likely as you'll be lagging at least 8-9 seconds. Don't get any aircraft cert, and don't even try bombing in the Liberator. You'll be effective 25% of the time, the other 75% you won't even be able to reload the bomb payload. Flying a Reaver or Mossy would be funny if it wasn't so sad. |

from what i hear PS has the best damn net-code ever. and remember, there are two types of lag:
system lag: when everyhting goes choppy and your frames per second fall off the scale. This is due to your system, or in planetsaide, mainly ram and graphics card. Since i upgrading from my Duron 1Ghz to my 533Mhz FSB 2.67Ghz Pentium 4, i havent noticed any difference in lag - reason? i only have 512 SDRAM [upgrading to DDR soon - i have a mobo that can take oth, just not similtaneously] and i have the worse graphics card ever. an Mx. Server lag: This is when doors don't open for ages, chat messages don't appear for ages and everyone seem snot to run around for a few seconds. Gaeplay itself is generally smooth but your not 'actually' going anywhere - and if your in a tank and this happens, its actually quite dangerous to the enemy.... *********IMPORTANT NOTICE********* DO NOT BUY A GEFORCE 4 MX440!!! SURE, ITS GEFORCE 4, AND SURE, ITS 128MB BUT ITS A PIECE OF SHIT!!! DON'T BUY IT! If your cheap, at leats get an FX5200 or radeon 9500 [soft-hacked to 9700 if poss] just dont get the mx! |
