Sniping

Just picked it up on my Primary (see my sig), and I can't hit Jack Schitt with it, sure I'll pick off a few non-moving targets, but thats it.

Any tips?

Yeah hit the guys that stop moving for more than 3 seconds. Shoot em twice, move on to the next one.

Hitting moving targets? yeah now thats a special skill. You have to lead the targets by enough so your reticle goes back down to nothing and still be ahead of them by the right amount, because you have to lead the target by a fair amount. Course this means you need a fair amount of open space. It also means you'll probably only get one shot on them.

It's mostly useful in my books for hitting that guy who is running for his life cause you just shot him. Anyone who is a sniper knows it takes about 3 seconds for the targeting reticle to shrink and probably won't run in a straight line for more then 2 seconds on an open battlefield.

And then occasionally you get into cool sniper duels against someone who is good and is constantly moving and so are you and then just as it gets interesting, he pauses to shoot cause you've just missed and another of your snipers wastes him.

I used to think advanced targetting was useful, but now I am not so sure as you need to be pretty close for it to work now and I like to sit back as far as I possibly can when I snipe.

And above all. Sniping is about patience and I personally wouldn't sit in the same spot for very long cause your tracers show people looking for you exactly where you are.

Ok I am done now I promies.

Sniping is a great cert. I wanna pick it back up again.

Hitting moving targets is a blast. You can just keep pecking away at a turret until the guy gets out, and you can nail him, then kill the turret. 1 sniper bolt = 5% of health from a turret.

I was fairly successful with it, when i had it. I may get it back again sometime.
But yeah it's useful when your in zerg conditions because you can kill those afk guys, people who dont move much, people who are looting corpses or people that think they are concealed, but arent.

All good points Strak.

First rule .. always crouch. You'll not hit a thing, 'cept maybe that cloaker that just snuck close to you .. heh. Speaking of which, I would suggest you have a multi-round weapon available for situations where you have to defend yourself. I find the sweeper quite useful in this role.

For stationary targets, make sure your reticule (crosshairs) is red and you have a shot on a body part. I've managed to beat out another sniper and vice-versa because of a near miss. At a distance, Maxs think they are safe to stand still .. and the TR Maxs in anchored status are sitting ducks .. an unfortunate place I've found myself more than I care to admit .. and they can't unanchor real fast either. Hmmm .. will I be hung for treason now?

Like Strake said, moving targets take some pratice, but they are the most enjoyable .. they don't know where the shot came from and where to hide!

Sitting out in the open and sniping is crazy, find some cover/concealment from return fire and other snipers .. you're not the only one out there.

I would suggest using Advanced Targeting when you are going to snipe. At extreme distance you won't be able to see the health of your target, for those within 200 meters you'll see you probably were hitting something and didn't realize it.

Another implant to try is the Range Magnifier .. this one is beneficial to snipers and scouts, not much else IMHO.

If you have the ability, I would suggest also using the Audio Amp implant, can give you heads up on a careless/not so quiet cloaker.

Something Strak brought up that I've enjoyed a couple times. hook up with another sniper, use voice chat if available and pick targets to team up on.

Heh, guess I got long winded too. Hope we helped some and hope I don't see ya on the other end of my scope.

Moving targets are fairly easy to hit once you get used to it. The only thing that will really throw you off after a lot of practice is when lag makes them hop around a bit, forcing you to predict their lag patterns in addition to their movement patterns, or when they move at the last second. I have missed many times because the target moves a tiny bit to the side while the bolt is in the air. Same goes for people running and avoiding a hit by stopping just as I fire. Those are my pet peeves as a sniper.

The benefit is negligible. I'm a full-time sniper and I really see no use in it. I can hit things just as well without the extra zoom.

I completely agree... in my sniper loadout I don't ahve any med packs, just a backpack full of rounds. If I see a max on the roof I will continue to pump rounds into him until he runs away... becasue even if I only get 4 or 5 rounds in it has weakened him enough that if some grunt comes around they might be able to do something with him.

I URGE ALL SNIPERS TO HIT MAXes WHENEVER THEY CAN!

This PSA has eben brought to you by the letters B & D and the number 2

Each to their own, i'm a full time sniper too and I love this implant, the extra 4x in my opinion helps alot, however I didn't like the adv targeting implant.

Also, sniping from a distance is obviously the best option, it means even if the enemy is running around you dont have to move your recticle as much, keeping track on the running enemy is alot easier.

When Sniping from distances, you need to be on high ground to see over those rocks, trees etc, but sitting on the very top of a hill is not always the best option, because you create a silhouette of yourself, and unless you are a vanu, I will snipe you. Sniping snipers is always fun, it completes me.

In which situations do you find it beneficial? I used it for a day and didn't think it was better than any of my other implants, but if you've found some situations where you wouldn't have got a kill (or would have become someone's kill yourself) had you not had this implant, I'd like to hear about it.

But, to clarify, I'm not saying it's a completely useless implant. It's just not worth an implant slot when you have other options.

I guess to each their own, I used to love advanced targeting, these days I am not so sure, I can possibly seeing trying out image amplification again for those really extreme range shots, which is where we should be. FAR FAR away make those cloakers run a long way to get ya!

The one time I was a cloaker I ran out to kill snipers and what do I come across?A team of 2 guys with deployed spitfires and motion sensors. Lesson, Yeah I think I need to be a combat engineer. Chuck a bunch of stuff in my 'guards trunk and drive to my new location, set up show and start doin' business.

The thing I have always had a problem with leading targets is how far ahwad you have to be. There are times I squeeze off my round and think all crap that was way to far...oh cool I got im!

My favorite sniper story is me in the caverns I show up and a module is on the move. I run my ass to a position and crouch, slap it up to 4x zoom, lead my target, time my breathing, squeeze the trigger. ****BLAM****. Cool I hit him, one more time! I reset up so I can see down the corridor he must run through, I wait. I can see his flashing light still. Eventually I investigate and discover he must have been injured and my crack shot made his day even worse.

The Bolt driver is a cool gun, but as it has been noted not so good in a stand up fight.

I do not believe there is a magic formula for being a good sniper, but if there is, it's chewing gum when you shoot.

I'm a full time sniper also. I use the 12x zoom practically all the time. I used to use Adv Targeting(and will again next BR) and find 12x zoom much more usefull. It is especially useful against other snipers since both of you are usually only showing your head and shoulders(if your any good). Also since you can zoom in so much further than most snipers you have a much better choice of sniping locations. I really think it depends on how you snipe, which one's better for you.

Im a full time sniper for the Vanu and the range implant doesn't help much. I can see how it would help sometimes, but I would much rather have audio amp to watch for cloakers.

The best thing is to team up with somone and go for the same targets. My friend and I sit side by side while playing and we both snipe and get one shot kills all the time cause we both aim for the same target. He has a med cert, and I have engineering cert, so we hardly ever die.

I used to swear by range magnification, but eventually decided it wasn't all that I thought it was. Even though it does magnify it more (and it's not 4x, I can guarantee that), the game is not drawing targets further out for you. You literally can't see anything that somebody without range magnification couldn't see. I see that as the fatal flaw of the implant. Eventually you get to the point where you can hit any spot at 8x that you can at the supposed 12x. If anything, it's easier at 8x to hit the moving targets as you get more to see in your reticule.
