Somebody who knows what they're doing should write a guide on global commanding ettiquette. Ideally global spam shouldn't even need to be used since messages can be relayed down through various command ranks to assign missions to squads. The CR5(s) leading a continent assault should make generic strategic plans, and pass specific assignments down to the Outfit leaders to execute. Voila! No more globals.
Is it really appropriate to global-spam a continent asking for someone to stop one guy back-hacking a home continent? Or informing everyone that Joe and his friend Mike are doing an ANT run for a base that's getting low? I'm in the Air Force and General John P. Jumper has never conference-called the entire Air Expeditionary Force in Iraq to request someone to go mid-air refuel a couple F-15s. So in conclusion: somebody who knows what they're doing should write a guide. |

those who know what they're doing know better than to try to impress the "good" leading on the masses. they turn to their own outfits instead.
[edit] more specifically, the good ones work together, get along, communicate between each other, their platoon, and their outfits, and they don't get in fights over global. they agree on their strategic movements and move as one, deploying avaliable forces and only occasionally globalling for reinforcements. as emerald vanu, these old/quiet "good" cr5s come to mind: rahl, danco, rev, millerbug, elana, deathkiss

Unfortunately, with the current lack of a real communication system between all commanders/squad leaders, globals are the only appropriate method of getting the message out. Now I will agree that there is FAR too much spam on globals, and that shit is just annoying. But the ones that are productive, such as organizing an armor battalion, max crash unit, or general troop movement direction, etc., are still very important. For the most part, the NC cr5s do most coordinating and communicate through command chat and inter-outfit, and only global when necessary (save a few spamming asshats). We generally take care of ant runs, repairing gens, etc., w/o doing a global for help. Hopefully a new command communication structure will go into place one day that will make coordination more efficient and cohesive, regardless of cr level. But right now, there's no way around globals.

I never tell anyone to do anything. I ask if anyone would like to and if they are please send me a tell.
You can never have too many pleases Don't ask people to recall off of anywhere, leave that to the other CR 5's, as they will be the ones getting piss tells. Lead through example. Instead of saying "Resecure Kusag hack now!" fly over there and do it yourself if you can. Granted I don't always do this, since I am busy (like many others), but it does help. Try to let the other troops know that you are listening and that you can relate to them. I try to respond to each tell that I get, as I don't like being left out of the inner loop and I'm sure no one else does. edit: Also, I agree that /telling of outfit leaders is far more effective than contalls or globals, considering an organized outfit with 20 people on is usually more effective than 35 zerglings. Last but not least, just be cool. Don't go on spamming in all caps OMGWTF CERYSEHN IS BEING SLAUGHTEREDD SEND HELPP NOW!!!!111ONE Last edited by Kikinchikin; 2003-12-29 at 03:57 PM. |

What you are asking is nearly impossible to do with the current system, but some of the in concepts we see intend to change that. Im the same - I ask for people to do things. I dont just start spamming OMFG WE NEED THIS THAT AND THE OTHER THING OR WE DIE?!!@#!@#

Here's the solution, and I was thinking about this last night.
The counter to /SITREP, which is a sending of information up the flow of information, is /FRAGO (aka Fragmentary Order), which sends orders and intel down the flow of information. Spork would alleviate a lot of stress and problems with that simple fix. |

Firefly - this is a great point, as was brought up in the recent in concept for commanders list. They are considering just adding a two-way command chat of some kind. That would be a great start, and a huge improvement to communication imo. I hope they do it soon.

I've only been cr5 a little over a week, so take my answer as a small sample size. I don't global unless I feel it is going to be usefull or necessary, so I haven't gotten any hate tells yet (crosses fingers). But I've gotten at least a few helpful tips, and volunteers. So far it's been a good experience.

I've had it for a few months now and I've never recieved a hate tell. I am an advocate of removing globals all togeather however. I must admit I have sent three though. In additon I don't use many continent broadcasts either. I use them to relay AMS positions or request AMS support to a specific location, otherwise the zerg knows well enough what to do. I have my contacts for getting generators killed and ant runs done, there's no reason to contall these things. I do use contall's for one other thing. I use them to affirm the faction. I think a lot of times we, as CR5s, command people to do things and that is that with that. If they don't get done, we get fed up, and if they do get done we take all the credit for the success. I like to send a contall after a long, hard fight thanking the faction for its efforts. Some might consider this spam but thus far I have got nothing but positive responses from doing this so I will likely continue to do so.
