He had a problem with the fuel system, tried to make the turn over the east river and failed. Probably aiming to get the plane over a strech of land to use the aircrafts airframe mounted parachute. Though using that system destroys the airframe beyond repair, the plane is roughly 250- 300k so using the system is a major bank buster.

Thus is an unfortunate inability to predict what an aircraft would do. He took a gamble and lost in my senario.
