PS2 Idea pile


Went digging thru the threads, didn't see anything like exactly like what im about to make. Planet side 2 is still highly mutable right now. We have a rock solid community that i'm very proud to be part of (super long time lurker, long time player and first time poster!). We also have a very receptive Dev Team. My goal is to create a thread that we can post our hopes, ideas, and dreams in, then get critiqued by our fellow players, and perhaps eventually in the next open forum with the Devs throw em out to see what they think, or they might even read this as it goes. its a dream.

Ill start this with what i want to see.

Knife Toggle/ training- in addition to a quick knife, the option to have the knife out and ready to stab. Knife upgrades (maybe a sword someday....would really make the sneaking classes cool.) and knife training. For example, a quick time mode where if you are trained in CQC you might be able to resist a side or front knife attack by pressing a button fast enough, then if you are trained further the knife fight would go on until someone dies, or breaks out of knife fight mode.

Athletic training- learn to swim, with swimming upgrade to a scuba implant or equipment. Another poster mentioned tree climbing. awesome concept!

In PS1 there were super massive trees, i would love to see at least a few battles in them, waged across bridges and giant "Tree houses" perhaps some kind of covert observation post or comm base. would really spice it up, infantry running across bridges, aircraft trying to maneuver in thru the branches vulnerable to infantry attack.

Vehicle wish list:
Motorcycles. If we have ATVs, we can totally have motorcycles. Faster and riskier, a little cheaper too perhaps. Options to put a self destruct on them so you could park them near a road or entry once you get to where you need to be, lay it down and arm it.

Artillery-The flail was amazing, it changed planet side in such a positive way. If we had some sort of common pool, or even infantry mortar. just something that offers indirect fire and team based fire control.

Empire upgrades for common pool vehicles- Vanu hover lightning (baby thresher)? Terran wheeled lightning (see Striker MGS in real life)? Tiny NC vanguard? super cool. same for all vehicles. perhaps an expensive upgrade.

Something that fills the role of an A-10 like the liberator did when not in bomber mode. big nasty forward gun.

Guns: I love scavenging, don't know about anyone else. Getting deep into enemy territory, doing well enough to run out of ammo. I hope we see another Punisher, but upgradeable over the long run to take all ammo types. Its charm was that it would never measure up to another gun, but it was full of surprises. Imagine a high tier upgrade for NC and TR to use VS laser ammo. But perhaps using it in a completely different way.

That's all Ive got for now. I hope to see critiques for the good or bad, and more people posting more suggestions. Just try to keep it semi rational.

These idea are about to be ripped apart by the community. Sorry but I've seen most of these discussed already (And I haven't been here long).

1) NEVER QUICK KNIFE! Ever. It's bad and nasty and I think it touches children.

2) No QTE's. Again, bad. Just lazy gameplay (except in Fahrenheit, those were a bitch to complete).

3) swimming would be cool but you're wearing big suits or armour. For the sake of balance, and the need of bridges, no.

4) Tree houses/bases? Diverse, but pointless.

5) Motorcycles might be cool, but ATV's are just fine really.

6) Artillery? Yes. Flail? NEVER!!

7) Empire upgrades defeat the point of common pool vehicles.

8) You want an a-10 type gunship thing? It's called the reaver!

9) Yes I want looting back. No you should not be able to use empire specific ammo.

That's my opinion on your ideas. My first reaction was to just mindlessly flame you but I'm bored.

Good news is that the liberator will be in PS2, so it will cover both the indirect and team based fire control and A-10-like function as it has a nose gun for the pilot as well.

The quick knife thread covered the topic of having both a quick button knife alongside an equipped knife. I went into this in detail for a knife option that was balanced.

In the same post I just linked there is a concept of parrying that was brought up by someone else. QTEs don't really belong in the game, but parrying where two people quick knife at the same time is a valid concept. Ideally if one player is below 30% health and they know another player is going to quick knife as a finishing move at close range they can block the attack hoping it'll give a friendly enough time to kill the attacker.

I think water is supposed to stop players and force them into bridges. Sidetracking that level design element might not be useful. There are however people that want naval combat for some reason so you'd need to talk to them.

I think someone might have said this in the past in regards to Hossin/Amerish having large trees. It is something I too would like to see as it's visually different and makes the continents unique.

Indirect fire has been viewed poorly by the community. However, a lot of people are open to the idea of lazing a target as long as the person that does it is within line of sight effectively making it more of a direct fired system. Also there has been fears about spamming doorways and vehicle terms, which while it might seem like a valid tactic, the flail made such things too easy. So as solutions people have suggested less splash damage and allowing AA weapons to target and intercept artillery allowing wall turrets to effectively shoot down artillery protecting bases and towers or more occupied areas. Read this, which was a debate on the subject. Also this is a link to a squad artillery system that balances most people's concerns and inputs.

The lightning is its own vehicle with a common design. The buggies will probably be released after beta. Empire specific upgrades I don't believe will be necessary for common pool vehicles and would just result in content permutation overload which the ES vehicles already cause enough of. We do want more content so making it extremely difficult to get a new common pool vehicle out shouldn't be stopped because they have to design 3 different variations of a skill tree.

Always been against the liberator having a front gun. Luckily the ES vehicles already have a front gun for you to use. If you notice they are similar in design to the A-10 vulcan cannon, so if we do see a Vulture bomber it can focus solely on bombing without overpowering it with a front gun also.

A lot of the guns have grenade attachments with different grenade ammo. It would appear that a common pool Punisher (while being my favorite weapon in PS1) will not be seeing a return due to role overlap conflicts presumably unless it's designed differently.
