i like to think i am a gamer, but i am a POOR gamer. i can rarely ever afford to upgrade my machine, or buy any of the latest games. You can imagine how happy i was to hear that PS2 was apparently going to be able to function on 4-5 year old machines.
However, i still have my concerns. The biggest one is that i have also heard it said that PS2 will only run on DirectX 10 or higher. This would be terrible for me as i simply cannot afford to upgrade either my OS (i run XP) or my graphics card right now. Does anyone have any up-to-date information on exactly how this is being handled? i know the graphics for PS2 that have been shown so far are mind-blowing (for me at least) and i'm very worried my old clunker of a computer simply won't be able to handle it. If people are interested i might be able to find my PC's specs, but right now all i'm interested in is the DirectX question. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Start saving. You can get something passable for a couple hundred bucks.
DX 9 is nearly 10 years old, 9c nearly 8. If you built a computer 5 years ago, it should have had dx10 support if you didn't buy the clunker-special. Geforce 8 series had Dx10 support in 2006/2007. We're 4 generations past that.

It won't surprise me if it's DX9 compatible, but, much as I hate the notion of leaving some people needing to upgrade to play; I really hope we can require at least 10.
There are so many awesome pieces of tech that 10 brings that don't get integrated into the design process because 9 couldn't use them. And eventually, you really do need to just draw a line somewhere. And that line should surely be more recent than 8 years. |

Up to you though -- I have a feeling some folks with older machines will be very combat-effective behind the wheel of a Sunderer or piloting Galaxies full of grunts. |

Agreed, but I can understand them optimizing for DX9 from a business decision standpoint and wanting to make the game as accessible as possible. I just wonder how hard/expensive it would be to add a few DX11 features in after launch?

Higby stated in the MMORPG interview "We expect the game to launch running at good frame rates on any Shader Model 3.0 or higher video card and at least a dual core machine".
Shader Model 3.0 should make it require DirectX 9.0c. Link to article http://www.planetside-universe.com/n...higby-2700.htm |

I don't kno if you guys actually know a thing or two outside of release dates and EOS postings, but directX9 still has steam in it. Good things can still be brought from using it.

Guys. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, its probably going to be 3 (or a 'badass' 4) year system. I think they were being generous. The 5 year system req was first said at Fan Faire. A lot has changed since then. Thats just my speculation.
