I was thinking on the hot zones and such, and how they will have indicators appear for PS2, though we haven't heard much on it, so I decided to submit a rather basic idea.
As we all know, PS2 is using a HEX style system for continental control. With such, I have thought of a way to help simplify the flow of information, even if it isn't needed as much. It is very simple, it could end up being annoying, but it could be useful, so I decided to submit it. The idea is this - Have HEXes in which combat is happening, have their border change to show the colors of all factions FIGHTING in that area (if the fighting has escalated into something significant). On top of this, having the colors rotate along the HEX edge will allow the bring attention to it. The inner color of the HEX will be of the empire that possesses the HEX at the current time. I created two simple mock ups, though I don't have any GIF program to make an animated example of the colors spinning, but I think this will suffice. First is the basic - the HEX is split into two or three sides of color, depending on who is fighting there. The we have what I call the barber shop style, where 3 colors are on each length of the HEX. This alerting wouldn't be as needed with hotspots appearing as a decal as they did in PS1, but it does help you quickly get a graps on the battle and see where the heavier fighting is. You will also see if it's two empires or three empires fighting. Apart from whether or not it is needed, it would not be hard to implement and could help with making the war map getting more attention toward the center stage of battle.I might look terrible and be an aweful idea in the end, but I felt it was better to suggest and get shot down, than never suggest and have been needed. |

Interesting idea but you need to think about how it may be like anyway.
Personally I think the hex being the colour that was already occupying the area should but the colour of the hex but then it then warns you of a conflict. This is because it doesn't matter what faction they are, theres still going to be a conflict, else there will be clear indication anyway if someone where to zoom closer in on the map. I'm sorry to say this but I think the barbershop idea is terrible as it makes it harder to understand what is happening at a quick glance. You need to know instantly and it's better to know what individual details you need to look at, why do you think they put so much work into the outlines of characters? I'm not hating, just saying that this has already been done probably as developers think of the ergonomics of the game at every possible point in development. Meatballs |

Not just the edges, but it could also have triangular wedges to further represent the hex being contested. In a glance someone may not notice the edges of a hex being a certain color, especially if there are a lot of multi-colored edges representing hexes in contested areas.

@Meatballs: He said that the interior of the hexes will still be painted with the color of the owning faction. Problem solved. Post reading skills increased +1. |
