Explain the goal to me please

I'm a tribes player. Planetside looks a lot like T2 (graphically even) so its has piqued my interest.

I can't figure out what the goal in the game is though.

In Tribes or T2 if you get more flag caps then the other team you win.

That's the goal. It seems tht in PS there isn't much of a goal. I have no information so I'm proably wrong, which is why I'm posting this.

Thanks!

I think a lot of people have a hard time grasping the idea of a persistant world. I've tried to talk a lot of my fps friends into PS, but a lot of them are so into the competitive ladder scene, they don't see the planetside's persistant world very entertaining. To them, they want closure, black and white wins vs losses.

The goal of planetside is a lot like capture and hold. The idea is a persistant world war 24/7 where your objective is to work with your faction to capture and hold as many bases as you can for as long as you can.

All I can say is Subspace Turf Arizona. Anybody who played subspace back when VIE was still running it knows what I'm talking about. Turf zones were the absolute best. Try to expand and hold as much as possible without spreading yourself out too thin to defend what you've already captured.

Yeah, that and you're basic DM fragfest (although it doesn't stop at a set number of kills)

exactly, tho it would be awesome with like some kind of statistic/scoreboard for every server to see who has the most points/captures/kills and more. Like player X has 20.000 kills, you have 15.000.

I'm sure there will be. The devs have said that they'd be tracking tons of stats for display online.

Right, I'm hoping for a PS version of camelotherald.com for DAoC. All kinds of xml server stats that I can check while bored at work.

That is key for making the game competitive for those who want to be able to rank themselves against other players and outfits.

I'm positive that it'll be even more in-depth than Dark Age of Camelot's stats tracking.

Falhawk.

Sup *****.

It's like Capture and Hold (ON AN EPIC SCALE ROFLOFLO!!!).

Some things we do know -- stats will be tracked. That's a huge one for me -- stat tracking in an ordinary fps game is very abuseable (change teams to the winning side to improve score, etc). In PS, it's a persistant world -- if someone wins consistently, they must be doing something right.

Actually, when I try to explain the lure of it, it makes it seem a lot less cool . . . but. Man. I've been playing Tribes 1 forever, never even played Tribes 2 much (returned it in disgust at first, later purchased again and reinstalled but I almost never play it), but I still play Tribes 1 multiple times per week.

But I also played DAoC for a while, and DAMN -- that 'persistant world' itch is something that Tribes just can't scratch.

That was the impression I was under as well. Being that the entire game is based around the war between factions while DAoC is half realm war and half PvE, I would certainly hope that PS would be tracking more info.

absolutely luc. Right now there is an unhealthy mix of daoc and tribes that keeps me entertained. PS will most certainly help in that regard.

Although, I'd imagine a MMO OpFlastpoint of sorts would be a sweet game too. That game could have rocked if the multiplayer aspect wasn't so cumbersome.

ok double post, need to take a break

Oh, forgot to mention:

They're doing a lot of stuff that I hadn't even heard of until just recently. Basically, controlling a facility gives very real benefits -- for instance, imagine if in Tribes, a couple of map-lengths over there was a base that when taken gave your team access to a dic launcher that fired twice as fast. Very clumsy approximation, but in PS if you own different types of installations on a continent you will get different types of advantages -- like having vehicles.

There's a cool 'supply' system as well -- it's like Team Energy for Tribes; each time someone spawns or uses an inventory station, energy is drawn from a central pool. You can refuel these bases, but you have to get the supplies there -- these funny looking semi-truck things called ANTs (forget what that stands for) . . . and to protect those, you might need an escort, or a Galaxy dropship to bring it in . . .

Also, taking a base is a huge endeavor . . . from what people here are indicating, a team of 16 people is unlikely to be able to take a base alone, because you have to remain in control of it for 15 minutes or something before it becomes YOUR base -- and you'll be dealing with enemies dropping down all around you. That's IF you even capture it in the first place.

I don't know, man. It's not Tribes -- nothing scratches that itch BUT Tribes, because of skiing. But it looks like it's going to be an incredible game, and I am definitely going to be playing it. I am a very obsessive gamer (example: I still play Tribes), and I tend to have only one or two games that I really play at any given time -- but those games I love to death. Planetside looks like it's shaping up to be one of those 'love it to death' games.

Anyways, I am definitely going to give it a shot.

Oh, and definitely watch the latest fileplanet video -- it's for subscribers only, so if you're a subscriber go ahead and get it now. If you aren't, well, you know where to go. oenone has the video, search for beta_gsi.

spartan89 i hope you get you account banned for mass trolling, thats all you do

the object is to conquer every island by taking each base...but the likelyhood of that hapining is slim to none because your empire would have to beat 2 to one odds dude to the other 2 empires. so its reall just kill everyone you can and take as many contenents as you can
