Its belived to add "spring" to a bat, and makes it lighter, lighter bats with more spring go faster and hit the ball "harder" thus it was outlawed by MLB.

basically you drill a hole in the middle of the bat, pack it with cork, and make it 1-1.5 ounces lighter. It makes a difference in the bat speed. Some people even use "Bouncy Balls" substance (the rubbery bouncy substance in bouncy balls) to get extra pop. They pack it in as tight as possible to keep the authentic sound of a solid bat and not let on that it is hollowed and lighter.

I believe sammy got caught red handed. They comphiscated his other bats so we will see if those are corked. I do believe he is a cheater though

Really? Cork 'n crap makes you hit farther? When we have pickup ballgames, I use the heaviest densest wooden bat I can find, and hit much farther than when I use something else.

As it says in the article that Mr.V posted, Sosa claims to have just picked up the wrong bat. Corking the bat only improves performance by about 1 percent, according to this morning's ESPN, so there wouldn't seem to be much of a reason for him to use it during a game. With forty or fifty bats in a dugout, it would be easy to just pick up the wrong one.

We'll see if he's been cheating when they inspect all of his bats.

Yah, but they only corked the bat for one ounce. You can do up to 3 ounces! That's 15-20 extra feet on the ball which is absoloutely huge.
