I think he actually woke up one morning next to an extremely ugly woman and had to cut his arm off to get away without waking her up. He then made up this story to be macho.

Seriously though, I have to give the guy a lot of credit, for all my times out in the woods and the survival training I have gone though, I think I'd still be too big of a pansy to cut my own arm off. If it were me, they'd find my corpse in the summer time, right next to the rock that pinned me.
