If you know, don't say it. Chapter 1: Prelude It had been a long day on Ceryshen. Vanu had savagely attacked Brig. Gen. AztecWarrior's base. Well, it wasn't his, but he was in it, along with his outfit. He returned to his room. Aztec wasn't very mentally stable. He had clinical depression for a while now. He also suffered from severe flashbacks. He had been tortured, executed, witnessed a nuke go off, he had been through every possible self-esteem killer. He had already killed himself, thanks to respawning he lived to tell about it. He had attended a brief anti-suicide group, and was whisked back into battle. As he returned to the barracks, he had a surprise. His recently-married wife, Black Widow, was there. She was a Warrant Officer, aka Secret Agent. She could be doing a job at any given moment. "Surprise!" But he didn't see her. He entered a flashback. He was tied to the wall. The armor had been plucked off his Agile armor. He was weaponless. It was the desert, somewhere. He hated this flashback. "Happy to see me?" CDL, a Terran clan, took him prisoner. He was reliving this. He looked at the person who said that. A female. Was he a nutcase? He had a phobia of that person. She had tortured him for three months. She had destroyed his matrixing info and killed him so he wouldn't respawn. It was {{eMaGyN}}. "Oh, God, no, please, NO!" Black Widow was stunned. "Honey, are you OK?" "ggg.....gg.GET AWAY FROM ME!" He huddled up in the corner. She knew that he was having one of his episodes. She locked the doors to the barracks. "It's me...your wife..." "Ppplease. Don't hurt me. Pppppplease." "Argh!" She walked over to the opposite side of the room. She had come all the way to see him, and this is what she got. "Nutcase. What a nutcase." she muttered under her breath. "I HEARD THAT!" he yelled. The flashback melted away. And then the argument began.

Chapter 2: Altercation
"I didn't mean it..." "That's why you said it?!" "Jeez, it's not like you never said something like that!" "Not this damaging!" "Can't you toughen up?" "So now I'm weak too? IS THAT IT?" She turned to the wall and put her head against it. "Ugh. Look, I'm sorry. I'm just annoyed. It took a while to get over here...I'm already pushing my schedule." "I'm not a nutcase." "I know you're not." "I'm NOT A NUTCASE!" He felt it . He was going to have another of his episodes. Or would he? A soldier walked in. "Do I look like a nutcase?! DO I! YOU! I'M TALKING TO YOU!" "No, sir." he muttered, a bit confused, and he walked out. Black Widow turned and stared at him. "Are you feeling all right?" "Oh, now you care, do you?!" "Yes. Yes, I do care." "Well...I don't know. I feel odd. Maybe it's because what you said..." "YOU JUST DON'T LET GO!" She stormed out of the room. The door opened and a Terran cloaker walked in. He looked around. Aztec whipped out his MAG-Scatter and peppered him. Black Widow sprinted back in, AMP in hand. "Someone in here?" "A cloaker. Got him." "He deconstructed that fast?" "....I guess. I was looking at my gun. Didn't see him go away." "Ok. Let's talk this over. I'm sorry for what I said. Is that enough?" He sighed. "Yeah. It is."

Chapter 3: Diagnosis
The two were in the bar/recreation room in the base. The only hard drink availible, Victory Beer, was weak. It had been sitting there for a while and and alcohol content had been lowered. They were going to ban alcohol from bases, so, adding to the frustration, drinks were going to be hard to come by. They were on a couch, not really paying attention to some cheesy sitcom that was on the television. "So, what's your next assignment?" "You never do know. I think it's going to be something big. You can sort of feel it. Command's getting edgy about something." "Any idea?" "Nope." A Vanu waltzed in, apparently unaware. "Freeze!" Aztec yelled, rattling his Gauss into him. The wall was stained with Vanu blood as the Reinforced Armor fell to the ground. "Nice. Head and upper torso. Good shots for a..." "What the hell?" screamed Black Widow. "I nailed him. You some kind of Barney lover?" "There....what....n...." She seemed confused. Aztec imitated her. "Are you feeling all right?" "Are you....nu...." She held her tongue. "What's wrong?" "Why did you fire at that wall?" "Because there was a Vanu in front of it!" Aztec raised his voice. He was growing impatient. "Oh....oh God no.....Aztec, I'm calling a medic." "So you want to revive him?"

Chapter 4: Dr. Freud
Black Widow dialed somewhere in Sanctuary. "What is the meaning of this? Why are you taking me away?" "There was nothing in front of that wall." "Yes! I am sure that..." Black Widow motioned for him to zip it. The person on the other line picked up. "Doctor Freud? Yes, this is Black Widow, Aztec's husband. You treated him....good. Can you initiate a holo-conference now? Aztec needs help. He just shot into a wall and he swears that a Vanu was there...ok, no problem." A hologram was projected a few feet from the phone. An Austrian psychologist, in medical coat. Dr. Freud was Aztec's psychiatrist. "Doctor? What is the meaning of this?" "Sit down, please." "I want to stand." "Fine, then. Sir, I am a believer in being blunt, so I shall be blunt. I believe you have schizophrenia." "What?!" "I know it may be hard to acknowledge..." "That guy was real! I saw him with my own eyes! I could smell the blood!" "All five senses are decieving you." "What if she's a spy? She could be a triple agent!" "Unlikely." "I can't have it. I'm NOT CRAZY!" He pulled out a PDA. "Brigadier General AztecWarrior. I am currently signing your medical leave form. You are hereby excused from service until I allow you back in. Please report to my office immediately for a more thorough analysis." "I'M NOT CRAZY!" "Indeed. You are merely ill." "I'M NOT CRAZY!" "Come at, oh, three in the afternoon." The holo-link shut down. Aztec had a sinking feeling in his stomach. Black Widow gazed into his eyes. "We have to go." "bbut.....I can't be...." He looked down and grabbed his hair with his head. "I'm not a nutcase." he muttered. NOTE: For those whose vocabulary is composed of "1337" and "hax0r", schizophrenia is a mental illness which causes hallucinations, but they are impossible to tell from reality. You can see them, hear them, feel them. The hallucinations appear as real as these words, as another person, as your chair.

Chapter 5: As reward, Searo gets an appearance
The Galaxy's engines hissed down to silence in the NC Sanctuary, landing in a nice area. The two got off and waited for a taxi to the city. Black Widow spotted Searo and a few of his friends a distance away. "Stay here. I'll be right back." she whispered. She ran off to Searo. "Searo!" "Oh, Black Widow. Guys, this is Aztec's wife. Nice to see you. Is Aztec..." "Excuse us for a second." She motioned for his friends to distance themselves from him for a while. The two got up to a wall. "Searo, we're going to the psychiatrist. Aztec's in really bad shape. I wouldn't want something bad to happen with you near. I'm not trying to give you the cold shoulder, I apologize." "Don't worry. I just got on seven day leave, I can manage. Is it just the flashbacks?" "No, worse. He's got schizophrenia. He's seeing things mixed in with reality. Back on Ceryshen, inside a base, he fired at a wall! I asked him about it, and he saw a Vanu just walking through." "Jesus." "It just happened all of a sudden." "Damn. You have my regards. Tell him to get well soon for me." "I'll call you later to see if you can see him. Ok?" "No problem. Thanks." "Okay." She walked away. Aztec was sitting down where he was instructed to. "Ok, let's..." "ssssh." "Are you seeing something?" "A sniper. He isn't looking our way. Terran, I think. Do you..." "He isn't real." "He....invisibility serum, maybe?" "Let's go. He won't shoot."

Chapter 6: Federal Penitentiary
The taxi stopped in front of the gate of a wide building. Aztec shuddered at its name. NEW CONGLOMERATE FEDERAL PENITENTIARY "Jail! Why are we here?" balked Aztec. "This is the mental treatment center." replied Black Widow. "No. It's all a trick. You're a spy. You work for someone." "Yes, I am a spy, but I spy for the New Conglomerate!" "Triple agent. You pretend to spy for them, but you don't. Now you are getting me into trouble!" "Just go..." "I'm not going in." "It's a hallucination. You are seeing..." "I AM NOT GOING TO JAIL!" A security guard came out of the gatehouse. "Everything all right?" he asked. "YOU! DON'T ARREST ME, SOLDIER! I OUTRANK WHOEVER RUNS THIS PLACE, YOU HEAR!" "What are you talking about?" Black Widow turned to him. "Got anything non-lethal on you?" "TASER shock gun." "Use it on him." "HOLD YOUR FIiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrr" He was interrupted mid-sentence by a friendly 5-second jolt from a TASER. (Yes, TASER is captalized.) The TASER doesn't just take you down. It interrupts your nerve signaling. Not drugs, nor willpower, nor stregnth will help. He was taken down and detained. He felt a prick in the back of his shoulders, and the world faded.

Chapter 7: ECT
Aztec awoke on a bed. It wasn't too soft. It had a force field around it, and a few air holes. He hadn't been hit with a shock gun in a while. A few people were around him. Black Widow was crying. The security guard was there, Dr. Freud, and some other people in prisoner's jumpsuits. "Aztec. I see you've met the guard. Welcome to the mental health center." The guard tipped his helmet. A porky male in Agile Armor. He looked at his clothes. Inmate jumpsuit. His name and a number written in black on orange. "Doctor....what are you doing here in a jail?" "This is not a jail." "Why am I confined to this bed? Why am I in this cell? Why...?" "It is merely a figment of your mind. You have lost the ability to distinguish reality and fantasy." "But..I can see it! I can smell it!" "I know. Your senses decieve you." "What am I being charged with?" "Sir, listen. You are ill." "I am ill. I have schizophrenia, I know." "There are three ways to treat this illness. The first is talking your problems over with me. It will take a while, at least a few months, and we may not be able to completely rid you of the disease." "I want to get back to the front as soon as possible." "Fine. The second would be ECT. Electroconvulsive therapy." "It rings a bell. ECT. From Health class." "I hate to use these words, but it's shock therapy...." Shocks. He remembered the torture. They hooked up a battery to some wires and had shocked him over, and over, and over.... "Are you following me?" "Wha....er...yes. I prefer not to be shocked." "The third is medication. The problem is, with the war and all, we are having more cases of post-traumatic stress disorder as more soldiers fight, and less people around to make the medicine. Due to your rank, you can be treated as a priority..." "I won't take medicine from another soldier." "A well-constructed conscience. A good sign. Well, this leaves you with choice one or two." He paused for a moment. After maybe 45 seconds, he chose. "Fine. ECT. I'll take the second choice."

Chapter 8: Day 1, first session.
A few hours had passed. Black Widow was still next to him. They were in a pre-operation room. Aztec was in a medical gown. Black Widow was in scrubs. She would be in the operating room. The others had left. "You know, I really admire you for what you chose. You didn't want to take medicine away from someone." she said. "I'm insane, but at least I'm not an asshole." he said, grinning. She laughed. "It'll be two weeks of this. Fourteen days. Can you handle it?" "I think. But there's a problem. Remember when....when CDL captured me...I got tortured for three months, you remember. Well, one of their devices was an improvised shock machine. I hated that thing. Now here I am again, about to get shocked..." She held his hand. "This'll be different." A nurse walked in. "Sir. It's time." They walked over to the table and he layed down. They put something in his mouth, a mouthpiece with a breathing tube coming out of it. They were attatching electrodes to him. He felt someone applying something to his legs. Within a few moments, everyone stood back. He was tied down. He recognized Dr. Freud's voice. "Ready?" "Yes." The machine started beeping and it started. ECT is, literally, a controlled siezure. Aztec started convulsing rapidly on the table. He lost control of his muscles. It felt simply horrible. The mouthpiece kept him from slicing his tongue off with his own teeth. Jerking, shaking! His heart rate had to be over 220. It was about to beat out of his chest! It was the longest 45 seconds of his life. And then it ended suddenly. He was sweating greatly. He felt his heart rate slowly descend to normal, along with his temples. "That's it." "That's it?" "At least for today. Get some rest, it's getting late." He looked at his wife. She was crying. He tried to think of something to say, but he couldn't find any words. He wasn't even sure of how he felt. When he got back to his room, he realized that it wasn't a cell, and that his clothes were not prisoner clothes.

Chapter 9: Whisked away
The doctor came up to Black Widow. "He felt no pain. Contrary to popular belief, ECT does not hurt at all..." "...like a fish on a pier...flopping all around...Jesus!" "It's for his own good." "I guess." Her beeper went off. A matter of national security. Of course, the usual bureaucratic bullshit could ring, also. Either the Vanu had gotten nuclear missiles in the air streaking for the NC Sanctuary, or the president had got a cold and agents would have to secure his home. She got a taxi to their apartment, got her car, and drove to Command's office. She was surprised to see quite a few agents there. Agent Shimmer, Searo's girlfriend was there. Several male agents were there, also. Some old man who was their commanding officer, but name was secret, came up to the podium in the assembly room. "Agents. The president will be making trips around Auraxis to personally decorate certain soldiers who will be recieving a new medal. The diamonds to the Medal of Honor. A new highest honor. We've seen a hell of a lot of heroes out there. You will be picked at random now. Those picked will be rotated. The rest can go home. Sure enough, Murphy's Law came into play. Black Widow was first called. Shimmer wasn't. After the meeting, the two long-time friends talked. "I heard about Aztec. Sorry to hear. How is he doing." "He...they just finished shocking him." "I thought that was only in the movies." "Guess not. It was...horrible....almost too much. It'll be two weeks of this, and now I have to escort His Majesty around. Damn."
