Getting a BFR requires that you are involved with 10 captures in the caverns worth at least 900xp, or 10 resecures worth 600xp, or any mix of caps and resecures worth 900 or 600xp respectively provided the caps and resecures amount to a total of 10. After you do this, you need to walk into the big beam of light in the central module charging building in any cavern to attune your resonance crystal so that you can pilot a BFR.
After you do this, you can cert a BFR by getting Armored Assault I, Armored Assault II, and BattleFrame Robotics. That takes a total of 5 certs. To use all BFR weapons, you need to buy BFR AI for 1 cert, and BFR AA for 1 cert. These certs unlock the AI and AA weapons respectively.
Once you have your BFR (which can only be piloted in agile or under) you can change its weapons and inventory at a rearm silo. They're the tall grey structures mounted on the inside of the base's perimeter wall. You can use any mix of two weapons or devices. Each weapon is good against one target, mediocre against one other type of target, and poor against the third type of target. For instance, AI weapons are good against infantry, mediocre against aircraft, and poor against vehicles.
Getting the BFR variants requires you to have the Advanced BFR merit. You get this merit by killing 100 merit kills, and then 20 merit kills in a single life (but not necessarily a single BFR). All kills for this merit have to be made with the BFR pilot weapons to count. A merit kill consists of any target that you haven't killed within the last 20 minutes, and who has been alive longer than 30 seconds. So camping is not a good way to earn merit kills in most cases. Note, though, that you have to get the 100 kills before the 20 kills in one life aspect matters. If you get 100 merit kills in one life, you will still need to get your 20 kills in one life after you get your 100th kill.
