Pistols in PS2


So maybe it's a running joke that there is only 1 rifle for every 3 Terrans, the others just get pistols...



But is there real cause for speculation on the increased leathality of PS2 Pistols based on how commonly they are used in the screen shots?

Perhaps there is a class that can only equip pistols?

Obviously infiltrators will likely be limited to pistols and knives and other small weapons again, as in PS1. I wouldn't mind seeing knives and pistols be a little more lethal in skilled hands.

I suspect that the pistol will be used to fill some gaps in certain loadouts. Maybe if you are running around with an anti vehicle gun, you have to rely on your pistol to remain useful against infantry threats. As a sniper, you may have few other options at medium to shorter ranges than pulling out a pistol.

Depending on how they implement weapon switching, it could be that a pistol is a much better choice to switch to if you are caught by surprise without an actual weapon drawn, while you are hacking a door or whatever.

I hope that pistols benefit greatly from head shot bonuses. I don't think they should be miniature sniper rifles with pinpoint accuracy, but I do think they should reward well placed shots to make up for a lower base damage, lower rate of fire and a smaller magazine size.

My thinking for headshot bonus damage is:

Sniper rifles get the most bonus. Maybe not one shot kills, but at least a significant bonus, especially if headshots are extremely hard to get.

Pistols get the next most. Not as much as a sniper rifle, but still enough to significantly reduce TTK's compared to body shots with the same pistol.

Rifles get the smallest bonus. You should still be rewarded if you can land a lot of head shots, but a single stray bullet hitting someones head shouldn't really affect the outcome of a firefight.

Beyond that I don't think any weapon should get a head shot bonus. Shotguns and HA are designed to put bullets all over the place, so it wouldn't really be rewarding your accuracy, it would just be giving random extra damage every x amount of shots. Vehicle based machine guns would just be overpowered with head shot damage on top of their usual DPS.

Obviously knives can have bonus backstab damage, but that's it's own thing.

Headshot damage bonus on pistols? I'm thinking about magscatters. Yeah, that's not a good thought. Still like the idea though, I'm an AMP man myself and the pistols have some good accuracy in general so headshots even at range is doable. Love to see their lethality improved so having them in a agile load out is an actual option for self defense.

At no point do I want to see a player pick a pistol to go into combat with rather than a SMG/rifle. The pistol should be a back up weapon for players, no more. Damage wise they should be decent enough to drop a player in a few accurate shots, and with a head shot sooner, but no quicker than other weapons. I certainly don't want to see pistols being sniper rifles like they were in Halo.

Maybe the pistol is one of the few completed polished weapons and that's why we are seeing it.

Pistols can often be superior CQB weapons to larger guns. But overall I agree with you

For the motherland... atleast it's not one rifle and one ammo holder.

On a side note, you guys seen noticed the bore size? Looks like it's atleast firing .45, should be doing some decent damage at close range.

so does that mean that NC get's something slow and powerful along the lines of... I dunno a S&W 500? ohhhh I can't wait to buy that soon, pure stopping power. Truly unnecessary revolver package.

In Halo the pistol was the only weapon between the Assault Rifle and the Sniper Rifle in terms of ranged combat. It was designed to fill that Medium Range gap between the two weapons, it could also force Snipers out of Zoom if you needed to suppress one. They fixed this in Halo2, making them much weaker and introducing the Battle Rifle, and in Halo 3 where they shot super slow and had no scope. Fans whined and complained for the old Pistol back so now in Reach it was given back but its range reduced compared to the DMR rifle, but it still has a faster TTK at close range compared to the DMR.

Pistols definately should not be like Halos pistol, since there are so many weapons that can fill the Medium/CQB gap in Planetside. They should be fallback weapons that skilled players can use effectively. Headshot Bonuses should be minimal as to avoid abuse like Halos pistols.

I zoomed in and tweaked this plane pic.

Evidently, it has short, stubby wings with anhedral (they angle down like the C5, Starlifter, and the Harrier), a tail that is a wide, Y or T shape, and some weird rounded construct on the side that could be the engine nacelle.

Engine intakes seem to be vertical rectangles on each side of the fuselage.

It seems to have a Gatling gun on the nose, and a single-crew cockpit.

Some kind of dorsal fin object.

And it either has magic stupid hover capability, or its stubby wings mean it has to fly very fast to keep from ramming into the dirt.
