E Gaming? Is it possible in PS2?

Edit* E SPORTS IS WHAT I MEAN!!!! FFS..........................(could a mod change the title for me pretty please?)

In SC2 its massive along with a boat load of other games, what you think folks is it possible in this kind of game a MMOFPS?

By E Sports I mean:

Tournaments,
Casts,
Strategy,
Etc etc.

Morto.

Including esports would attract more attention for PS2 and attract more players.

However, splitting the esports portion of the game into a seperate space where the players don't need to worry about being affected by all of the other random players would take away players from the massive battles and would thus hurt the main part of the game.

The problem is that you don't want to lose players to instanced battles where you are missing out on the true planetside experience, but you also don't want a bunch of random players or imbalanced populations to be ruining your esport match.

The only solution I can see is this:

Players practicing for the esport have to play in the regular game world along with everyone else. This is the only world space available for them to hone their skills.

The actual sporting matches occur on an instanced continent, with balanced starting conditions for all sides.

This is Planetside, so it would have to be TR vs NC vs VS, 3 teams against each other, none of this one team vs one team crap.

The teams would have to be large to reflect the style of gameplay. Maybe there would be a few different levels of the esport, for varying team sizes, almost like weight classes:

20 - 39 player teams = small
40 - 59 player teams = medium
60 + player teams = large

All sides would have the same number of players, so if NC only had 29 players while the TR and VS had 32 and 35 players respectively, all three sides would have to select which 29 players they wanted to play with.

A large match could potentially be as large as population limits allow. Of course, a single team would have to be able to field that number of players, but it would certainly be a new take on esports.

Made a thread about this last month, got a lot of interesting feedback in both directions.

The bottom line for me is that I will play Planetside 2 and try to be the best either way, but if there is the potential for financial incentive in a way that doesn't detract from the overall experience of the game then I would be really excited for the opportunity to earn a living playing it.

I'd like to see scheduled PlanetSide2 event for the SOE Fan Faire.

My vague idea of what would happen:
  • SOE go through process of locking a continent on each region-server.
  • Everyone can participate. PS2 players are hyped for the SOE Fan Faire.
  • SOE Fan Faire can spectate whole map and key locations making for a tournament-like feel.
    Big Screen.
  • SOE Fan Faire will release a giant automated super-weapon 'Titan' would appear for each faction sub-sequently. (TR, then VS, then NC!)
    • Players attending SOE Fan Faire have priority access to the 'Titan'. Non-priority players are kicked from 'Titan' seat when priority-player wishes to enter.
  • End of SOE Fan Faire battle or end of SOE Fan Faire decides the winner of the region-server continent.
  • Faction is rewarded (Last 'Titan' Standing).
  • Attendees participants are rewarded for participating.

Because why the hell not?

E-Spots, Outfit Wars, or any other idea that takes the fight out of the world and into an arena (no matter the size) is bad for the game.

PS was always about large sprawling battles between the Empires. If an outfit happened to run into another outfit at a base than so be it. The moment you start giving people a reason to get out of the open world and into a ladder/arena environment is the moment the game begins to decline.

Let's be real here folks. If people wanted an "e-sport" they'd play any of the other already well known and established games. The people developing PS2 could learn a lot from BF3's debacle and focus on what made the original good and improve on that. BF3 tried to step up and be an e-sport competitor with COD and only ended up being an embarrassment.

Most likely not. E-sports would require pretty much instanced areas where outside interference is impossible. It would also sort of require equal starting points and terrain and RNG couldn't really be a factor in deciding the winner.

PS2 would require a massive overhaul to make e-sports viable and I don't see that overhaul to be worth it for PS2. PS2 is about something totally else.

And that is the problem. To have a true Planetside Tournament, it would require a locked continent, 3 teams, and 24 hours. Because if you contain 24 guys and have a deathmatch for 15 minutes, it isn't Planetside

I think that Planetside 2 should be a Planetside game first and foremost.

Once the game is established, maybe we can pioneer a new chapter in e-sports. A sport that doesn't happen in a vacuum, away from all of the other action. Is it possible? Who knows. But I think that is the only way that PS2 will work as an e-sport.

Better to be a pioneer than a follower anyways, right? Let's either keep the e-sports out of PS2, or redefine what's possible in an e-sport.

Incorrect, Outfit wars increased the population of Planetside.

from the time of its announcements activity in Future crew was up from an avg squad of 5 to and avg platoon of 20. to just over 30 at the time of an outfit wars match. Other outfit were the same, because when an outfit wars battle wasn't happening we were online an practising and getting better for outfit wars. after outfit wars ended population dropped again with no real reason to play.

I disagree with everyday instanced battlegrounds and quing, but tournaments every so often isn't going to hurt the game...oh no there is sixty people missing out of THOUSANDS. ...

Best fun I ever had in planetside is outfit wars and organised TOD's VS HT and PCP.

I wouldn't mind outfit wars per se, but just don't try form it into an e-sport, cos as long as others will have the ability to interfere, it can never be taken seriously. Also, if it isn't an on-demand and very regular thing, that's another thing killing it from being e-sports.

But sure, host outfit wars every now and then, but don't try to form PS2 into an e-sport

Just as I said about skiis being Tribes privilege, so I say E-sport should be only presented as SC and CS. PlanetSide is about scale.

Competitive missions (via mission system)? Yes.
Competitive sport (for prizes 0.50+ USD cost)? No.

Motorsports? What?

Speaking of which, I hope they have improved the driving physics of all vehicles, not just aircraft. ATV races! Then buggy races, once they put buggies back into the game.

Extra points if the race course you use runs through an active battlefield.

E-Sports: NO

But I agree, I hope they really improved the physics. I want my vehicles bouncing around, leaning to the right when you make a hard left, drifting, feeling the suspension and the shocks groaning from a hard landing, ohhh yes.

Races: NOWAI
