How many servers are you looking forward to having?
Personally, I hope they limit it to three servers again. I'm afraid by having too many servers, it will strech the populations too thin (like how it was in PS1, servers ended up being merged). Keeping a small number of servers also keeps the populations condensed. There's also the issue of wanting to play with all of your friends and familiars from the previous game. Personally, I'd rather play with a bunch of old PS vets on one server than be spread onto a bunch of other servers with first timers, just a personal preference but I think many can agree. Essentially, limiting the total number of servers keeps the fights big and the action constant. What are your thoughts on the total number of servers there should be at launch? Granted, if populations are gigantic, they should obviously expand, but just from my perspective and experience with the first game, a smaller number of servers would be better. |

Lawl, 3 servers = 30000 concurrent players TOPS.
some stats: BF3 had 200k concurrent players at its launch on PC alone. TF2 had 50k concurrent players when switching to F2P DCUO saw a 1000% growth when it went F2P. MF3 currently has 70k concurrent users dungeon defenders a shiity game that had only steam advertising and had a $12 fee to buy it had over 30k concurrent players at its launch. They're going to need a SHITLOAD more than 3 servers. Yea sure, they might have to cutback servers after launch numbers die down, but they're crazy to not plan for shitloads of people. I would be thinking more like 10 servers, minimum. 4 east 3 west 3 euro. this isnot 2003 and this is not pay to play. |

SOE still hasn't launched ANY marketing, ZERO. If they continue on this path like PS1 I can see 3 servers at launch, but if they actually advertise we have the potential of FILLING at least 5 servers (4 American, 1 Overseas)

If they were super crazy awesome they'd go one (apparent) server style like Eve, but I don't think there are enough conts for that. And of course lag...
One apparent server for Americas, Europe, and Asia each would be kick ass though. |

Well The way I see it... They don't really need to handle their ad campaign. We got that covered. Last edited by xSlideShow; 2011-12-04 at 11:29 PM. |

Admittedly three servers was a bit low, I'm just slightly jaded based off of what I've seen from PS1.
Free to play is a good point. There's certainly going to be more people playing this time around, so that's something to look forward to. One thing I haven't yet seen to be confirmed is if it's just a straight up FREE to play. No cost at all to buy the game. Or is there still going to be a purchase fee? I'd prefer the ladder personally. A straight up free game would allow any swinging dick to pick up the game, install at and play like an asshole. Having to purchase the game would at least deter a few of those people. Also, I'd like for them to include the original three (or five servers). For one, just for old times sake and two as a means for veterans to pick the appropriate server. I'm really concerned about that, I would just really like to see some familiar names amidst all the noobs we'll be seeing, I don't know why |

I really don't understand how they could possibly stop people from playing like assholes when they can simply get banned, create a new account in minutes and start the ass-hattery all over again. If you ban their IP, they can easily change it and continue on. I remember DarkFate mentioning talking to Secant about banning HDD serial numbers but he said even Secant found a way around that in a matter of time. The pointing a purchase style free to play would deter most people. And even if I didn't, at least SOE would be making some $$$ off of it. I'm a very frugal person and I hate spending money, but when it comes to PS2, the last game I've really cared about in forever, I want what's best for it in the grand scheme of things. |

no its more they're limiting how people can be assholes. for one we know grief will ramp up alot faster for a new account. i would presume friendly s wont be able to damage tubes or gens again or any other sort of fixed friendly emplacement. I would think there would be limitations on CE been able to be deployed. there would be limits on purchasing anything that can drain resources or effectively grief an empire or player. when tked they plan to have a "penalise/forgive/report" option, something to that effect. have to wait until the game is played, im sure we can nail out whats proper griefable in beta. |

I HIGHLY doubt that the game will be a free download. There would be hackers galore, even more than SOE would want to deal with. Besides, a game like this will deserve a box price, and they need it to replace the funds lost developing the game.
If enough people want the game, and there are ~2000? they said per continent, assuming there are 5 continents in at launch, I'd say there would have to be at least 20 servers. If this game is actually MARKETED, then I have no doubt it will pull people in excess of 200,000 people on launch. |

Guys call it shards not servers....
I doubt or at least I hope that the current PS is not hosted on a single server. (Although I guess now it could be due to the lack of pop) The shards are normally clustered (multiple) servers (virtual or physical) delivering to the end users. Clusters can be scaled or reduced according to demand. This allows them to scale depending on how popular the game becomes. They are given logical names often called shards in online gaming. I would expect at least one Shard for the major geographical hubs and if they use tunnelling or compression technologies I don't think latency would be to much of a problem. (Networking has advanced massivley since PS was first designed) The CCP servers are all in London for reference but it is a very different game. The above is an educated guess |
