Make ps1 free

Hey guys, I'm just suggesting that perhaps SOE should make Planetside 1 FTP. Let's face it: Planetside 1 does not have very many people playing it, and the closing of the free trial has led to a decrease in the number of people even wanting to try it. Not to mention that with more people playing the game, planetside 2 will gain more attention and the game will be even more popular upon release. I undersand that SOE wants to maximize profits, but making the original free would be a nice advertizing move, and one that we planetside players would appreciate as well.

I'd say I have to agree somewhat. At the very least, once PS2 comes out, Keep PS1 going, but make it free? It'd be kinda odd to go "PS2 is great, but I want some old school PS. Oh wait, I have to pay $15 to play it. Nevermind."

I don't think SOE would ever make PS1 free to play. The only source of income for PS1 is the sub. You're basically just asking them to run the servers for no chance of income whatsoever. From a marketing perspective, i'm sure the money they would lose running those servers would be better off making tv commercials or something.

I wrote a long reply, but ze internet ate it, but Chud above pretty much TLDR-moded it.

But yeah, I'm fairly sure once PS2 goes live, they pull the plug on PS1. The only reason they still keep it up cos the subs create revenue, most likely a nonexistant amount, but as long as they are not losing money, why not? That's probably also why PS has nonexistant support, cos it would cost too much seeing everything.

PS going F2P till PS2 could work, but has some major downsides too. The game has outdated mechanics and graphics, not sure if it would be a good tool for promoting PS. The population even as F2P probably wouldnt be big enough to truly experience Planetside anymore. A huge thing is hackers, we already have a fair share of those, cheaters would infest this game and cos its not worth of them to support this game at any large scale, the playerbase would probably overall be left with a sour taste from the game going F2P. Not to mention, they would lose money in short term over making it F2P, naturally.

And if it counts for something, Im still subbed and playing.

As much as I'd love not to pay a sub, I think making it F2P would do more harm than good.

I take it you saw Everquest went F2P? Sadly such a model wouldn't work well for PS1 since it has no real security in place against hackers. Chances are the game will be shut down instead. I sent a tweet last year ago this actually.

I'm thinking that a month or two before PS2 launch they'll just reactivate all inactive PS1 accounts, and then pull the plug roughly at PS2 launch.

C is right, hackers would ruin this. Having lilililiilillliiiilll kill potential PS2 buyers with his underground scat max would be bad for business.

They recently announced EQ was going Free to Play, so if they haven't for PS1 I'm afraid it'll just be shut down.

Keep PS1 pay-to-play so that potential PS2 players aren't turned off to the brand, and then shut it down when PS2 arrives.
