I lurk these forums alot and I feel like posting tonight so first let me say, the Devs, are doing an awesome job, I love the community interaction. I loved EVE because of how active the Devs at CCP were with the community, but they seemed to do less and less of it the longer I played. Kinda just felt like the community was drifting apart from the Devs.
ANYWAYS... I'm wondering how much is PS2 and SOE attempting to attract console gamers. Most console gamers game mostly on consoles only, atleast in my circle of friends. They don't use PC's for gaming, they use laptops for Facebook. Lets face it though there is a VERY large market there. If SOE wants to try to get these people that the best game to play on PC is going to be Planetside 2 I suggest advertisement into more main stream midea. I've read that PS2 can be played on your older computers, so getting people to realize that they can play an epic game on their PCs for FREE should be a big priority right? Diablo III has television ads all the time, as does WoW. I occasionally go to movies and sometimes I see nice advertisements there. I know it would be expensive and it would mean the game would take longer to make aprofit, but the pay off could be huge. At the least some ads on YouTube. Ads in places other than gaming sites would help. Word of mouth is nice but it seems when I tell my friends about this game most of them just shrug it off because the game is on PC. Maybe its because most of my friends don't use PCs much anymore, because we all have smart phones/ tablets to surf the web, and laptops to do work on. I hope PS2 can run on an average laptop (if you bought a mouse). Sorry that was long and drawn out but I havn't posted in a while. Edit: Damn it hamma, your sig bot ate the thong max sig. |

Welcome Peacemaker.
Here's the most recent statement I could find on this: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...-duty-audience Q: This project is part of a renaissance at Sony Online Entertainment. With the shifting marketplace, is Planetside 2 still intended to be a PC-only product? Matt Higby: For the game itself, we're focused primarily on PC. |

I play on consoles and the PC and from what I have encountered of the console only crowd, they can stay there and leave our PC games alone. I am so tired of game developers catering to the console group just to make a buck. When I see that I generally avoid those games. Games that are made purely for the PC turn out better IMHO. Plus our community is better.

Getting connected to the internet used to be a big thing, but now even our wristwatches can do that. It used to be that everyone wanted to upgrade their computers to the latest Pentium (lol I know) so that they could do stuff faster.
Unfortunately, our technology has gotten so good that even the cheapest of today's computers can open facebook just as fast ad the most expensive one. Well, it doesn't really, but both are faster than we can perceive, so yeah. So now we've shifted our focus away from having something lightning fast to something that light enough for us to brag about our last night out at the club while at the crapper, or even posting said humble brag pictures moments after we took them. Console gaming is successful for the same reason fewer people are interested in buying the most powerful hardware - most aren't conneseurs (sp?). The mediocre performance of a $600 laptop is so powerful compared to our normal human reactions that more expensive faster machines don't seem worth the extra price to them. The graphics on the current generation of consoles is good enough to satisfy most people (maybe because their eyesight is bad, or maybe its because 70% of people don't realize they naturally have 3d vision) that few feel the need to invest in the extra hardware to push game developers to show what is actually possible with the power of actual modern computers. I play a lot of PC games, and have a lot friends that play the same games on consoles. I have made it a personal point to invite them over and set up their Xbox or PS3 alongside my PC screen and show the difference. And even my 2-year old mediocre machine absolutely dwarfs anything they'd ever seen on their consoles. Its a harsh reality that I've put before most of them - they got ripped off. I don't know why, but the latest generation of gamers just doesn't seem to have that inspiration to push the technology, the immersion, and the details. They seem contempt with playing farm ville on their phones all day. But hopefully, PS2 will change that.

Imho: FPS games on consoles = epic fail
Everytime I see someone play a shooter on a console it just looks so crippled I don't understand how anyone would do that to himself. Of course console players would be heavily disadvantaged when playing together with PC players. So the only sollution would be separate universes... |

Eh, there's still a big market on PC. Diablo 3 outsold Uncharted 2's lifetime sales in less than a week, and doubled Gears of War 3's first week sales, and those are among the best of the best in console exclusives. All you need is exposure and hype. Blizzard had advertisements, billboards and easy access beta's. If SOE doesn't skimp on that exposure and remembers to open up the beta for a bit they can get millions of gamers.
Also, they can't forget Russia and China, F2P games shine in those countries (especially China where consoles are banned) and will provide more profit to SOE than any console ever could. Even if it means delaying to translate for more languages, DO IT! Last edited by Spark; 2012-05-27 at 04:56 AM. |

Come on... this is just gonna end in another shitstorm. Let consoleplayers play on their consoles and we play our PS2 on PC. No need for whiners on each side. If they want they can buy a PC and play with us, if we want to play consolegames with them we can buy a console. Lets not make a big deal out of that.

My guess is that current gen consoles are going to have a hard time running this game. The biggest FPS on consoles would be MAG on PS3, where there was 128 players in one game. Even then they where split up into four areas of the map, So it was really 32 vs 32 in four different places.
But, I can foresee the next gen hardware having an easy adaptation for planetside 2. Even Bungie is working on an FPS MMO title for Xbox 720(not the current one). So maybe we'll see it on PS4, but for now you can invite your friends over and convince them to buy a gaming PC =D I'm guessing a ~$500 PC w/ a core i3, $150 graphics card + 4 Gigs should run the game just fine. The only useful information i can find on my laptop. Intel Core i7 CPU q720 @ 1.60GHz, 4 cores, 8 logic processors. RAM 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M Oh and it cost about $2500 (NZ $) So about $1,884.37 USD. And he thinks this game will just be a massive version of COD/BF3, with no teamwork or anything, then i said. "Go join an outfit." Thats probably the best way to find teamwork. Last edited by Toppopia; 2012-05-27 at 05:44 AM. |
