EvE already does this, and they do it quite well. They're the only game that has a SINGLE server, I'm pretty sure. Its all persistent, ect. It doesn't affect my ping times at all. But the way Planetside 2 is designed, with its population limits, it would be impossible.

Distance has less to do with it then the route the packets must follow. The more servers you have to bridge your connection through, the higher your ping.
You could be 100 miles from the server and still have your connection being bounced halfway around the world instead of a more direct route. |
