How on earth does removing hate tells promote faction loyalty? If anything it increases rivalries...

Hate tells are the backbone of this game.

most of rivalries I earned/had in Planetside were created out of mutual respect for enemy players skill... none of the hate tells I have recieved in any game has warrented my attention
By only being able to communicate with your faction you build comraderie for your side you all have the same objective and you all light heartedly rib/mock the enemy.

If you can only conceive talking to enemy players as a format for trashtalk, you're a sad, sad being.
  • We created events (inter-empire events with 200+ Sunderers), as well as temporary truces for stab and duel events, including sharing of rules.
  • Temporary alliances ('the enemy of your enemy is your friend')
  • Share intel on which players were cheating so the empire could try to "contain" the cheaters
  • We've agreed on anti-spawncamping rules in the cavesyou get to be more respectful to enemies (!)
  • I've recruited more than one enemy for my outfit or out of game friendslist based on a conversation we had reflecting on earlier engagement or shared love for Sunderers or amphibious warfare
  • Explaining to a person how come they were found and shot (infils)
  • Asking if they seen certain other players and outfit mates online recently because you don't have their out of game details
  • Congratulating them on pulling of a specific maneuvre, getting away with something or smart or organised play.
  • Prying intel out of them.
  • Having them solve math questions (and become stationary targets for a Mag Scat Pistol bummrape)
  • Making them do a full Dark Light Sweep of the base they're in while you're on another continent, JUST because you're a cloaker and they know you show up in the weirdest of places and regularly contact them when you're near them. Hilarity ensues when you tell them you're on another continent, they sigh a breath of relieve and you pop them anyway.
  • Exchanging jokes
  • Exchanging frustrations
  • Continue forum discussion in a more private and relaxed setting
  • Getting asked to unsilence them, ban cheats, start or stop SOE events all just because your in-game name is Fi-GM-entOfYerImagination

Only a minimal fraction of tells received are hate tells. The majority of tells between empires are praise and social banter.

Just use the ignore list if hatetells are such a bother to you.

Hate tells for the win.

Also, some of us have friends on the opposing side. Nice to /t them sometimes.

I really like /L so you can locally chat with enemies. (like taunt them if they are around the corner.)

They need to keep cross faction chat. I enjoyed talking with other members from TR and VS from time to time. Some of the hate tells where hilarious and I enjoyed taunting them as I was killing them.

Re: Cross faction chat?

we had cross faction /whisper or /tell in the original and I'd like to see it return, other than using it for hate tells I liked to compliment rival pilots for excellent dog fights or to a sneaky stealthier for a well laid trap.

While I've had plenty of hate tells over the years I took and take them all as compliments of out playing and frustrating an enemy. My usual response to them is "awww that's the nicest thing you could have said to me"

Rivalries can be fun!

I often enough use /t with an enemy. Never do I use it to 'trash talk'.

Either ignore people sending those meanie-pants tells, or grow some thicker skin.

Cross faction communication must be in game.
Have it PS style, where you can only talk to them in private chat.

If it's just tells like PS1 was I don't see a problem with it. That's what /ignore is for.

Well for it being "a very basic social engineering principle", it didn't make all too much sense to me in that other thread, and it still doesn't now.

First off, why is trash talk a bad thing per se? Especially in a game genre that breathes competitiveness?

You say it isn't "conducive to building a positive social environment" (hear hear!) - and in your next sentence stress how the factions are enemies to each other. Why do we need to build a "positive social environment" again, when it's so important that we're enemies? We may want to mock and taunt our enemies - but "that must never be allowed"?

Besides, I have had tons of very respectful talks with players from the opponent factions - probably more than hate tell exchanges. If it wasn't for that (and the forums), these people would've always been "those dirty VS/TR". So talk about a positive social environment - but wait! That must never be allowed! xD
