This seems like a non-issue at this point because the poll OP has linked to has nearly 80% of the people saying they'd either play a sci-fi game (60%) or would at least try it (19%). I don't think we need to downplay the sci-fi at all, especially not for a little over 1/5 of a target audience.

And that's 20% who wouldn't. 20% of BF3's playerbase of 11 million is 2.2 million. If I had the power to poll all 11 million of them I would, but I don't, so a sampling is the best I can do. Go ahead and say that it's not a big enough sample, but that's your opinion, just like I would need to poll all 11 million to prove my views, so too would you need to poll 11 million to prove yours.

and 80% of 11 million is 8.8 million. I think if we can manage those numbers we won't need that other 20%.

Also, million no longer looks like a word.

Obviously, we aren't going to get all 8.8 million. What if we the number of players we get, whatever it is, is 100,000 short of profitability(and therefore, survivability)? Then people will suddenly become interested in mining from the other 20%.

There are some people on these very forums that want PS simply because it's going to be the best multiplayer shooter there is not set in modern time. These people play call of duty/battlefield without respawn every day in mid-east and are playing games to have fun, not to remember a bullet that nearly killed 'em.

I've got a better idea...
When/if you get into beta, get yourself a copy of FRAPS and make your own video promoting the awesome spectacle and epic-ness of PS2, and downplaying its sci-fi tropes.
You clearly have an idea of what you think other communities desire.
Do it yourself.
Or, take ownership of the problem and when beta starts, get together a bunch of like-minded people who agree with you and do it yourself.

I think your idea holds merit, but you've approached it from the wrong direction.
There's a reason why I don't just plan on doing this...I have no skill or knowledge at it. For example, all I know is this: FRAPS videos are huge...you can't just post them up to YouTube.

Perhaps you can help - what is the BARE minimum number of programs you need in order to:
1. Record video
2. Compress to a reasonable size
3. Add audio commentary

I asked this before on another forum and got a list of like 5 programs to use, holy shit...and as far as audio commentary goes, can I avoid the need for a special program by talking into an empty teamspeak channel while making the videos? Will FRAPS or other recording programs pick up the audio if you do that?

Its cute how he thinks his group of a few thousand people tops is representative of several million that's for sure. Especially when they are all members of the same forum.

Did BF3 downplay its vehicles so it could attract more CoD players? I don't think so. Thats because the vehicles make up an important part of the game. If you start covering up aspects of the game, you're just lying to those people that were pulled in by that lie.

PS2 is sci-fi because the devs wanted to make it sci-fi, no need to downplay important aspects of the game...

You've got just as much proof that your claim is correct as I have that it's not. In the end, what does it hurt to carefully reach out to potential players? Again, you may not believe in sampling, I do. If we were talking about my forum's views on casualizations, those views are echoed on every forum I've ever been to as well as in game. When BF3 was in development, there were threads against things in the beta Battlelog forums. And those forums were a completely good sampling, because I believe DICE made efforts to send beta invites out to various community groups, including CoD. However, we're not talking about that. We're talking about my beliefs regarding sci-fi theme, which is something I've only thought about in the last few days, and as such, haven't been able to go to a lot of forums or ask in-game.

I've said many times in this thread that I'm not asking the devs to downplay anything. If you're suggesting again that I am, that particular accusation is getting old. With that said, BF3's devs DID change vehicles. Vehicles in BF3 are weaker than ever before in BF, and the focus on small maps(ie, Metro) that don't have vehicles is greater now than ever. In fact, Close Quarters DLC is coming up and I don't even know if there will be a single vehicle in the whole thing.

Also, gentle introductions are not lying.

With the thread-crappers asking for it to be closed because they don't agree, absolutely.

No, the crap your posting is nonsense that's why it needs to be closed. Its a sci-fi game. We do not need to do anything to Downplay what it is. We do not need to compare these guns to modern guns and so on. They will either like it or not. PS2 is going to be fine come release. Just because 20 guys on the other thread do not like future games is no reason to start asking for us to "downplay" as you have in your title what PS2 is.

PS: Duke stay out of this. I'm slow on my edit button and accidentally hit submit before my message was finished.

I want to make one more note as I do own and play all the BF games and I do enjoy them. Those 20 guys do not represent more less even come close to 20% of the BF population. That argument further up in the thread is nonsense.

PS: Duke, I have not once called him a Idiot nor do I think he is one. I just think his reasoning for wanting it is "meh". why do I keep writing additional comments to you. :P
