I've only browsed this thread, but I think it got sidetracked towards interpersonal relations, hype and whether or not PS2 is F2P based on this "preorder".

There is, however, some interesting info to be found in the description on GameStop:
WEAPONS: Players will be able to access more than 20 basic weapons, which can be customized to players' preference or purpose.
(the original had 18 weapons, at launch, that I could recall; does that mean the 3+ unaccounted for are more unique weapons, or for instance a few additional empire-independent assault rifles?)
VEHICLES: A total of 15 vehicles, with two unique vehicles per empire. Players will be able to customize each vehicle, unlocking new skills and features
(if we count 3 MBTs, 3 likely empire-specific buggies, an ATV, the semi-confirmed bomber, and the 3 confirmed flyers, that leaves 4 vehicles; which ones could they be?)

I think we should also consider whether or not this is a preorder for a real product.
Now, the sites are reputable and they seem to have some never-before-seen information which should have only come from the publisher...
But I've seen my share of "preorders" for games that don't even exist, and quite possibly never will, like The Witcher 2 for the PS3.
A lot of companies would offer preorders for such "virtual" titles on a hunch, even if they've got no basis to assume these will ever be released, let alone when and for what price. I've always considered these "offers" as scams, or at least tricks to generate hype and site traffic.
Just to clarify, you don't pay up front for these "preorders", right?

What I mean by all of this is we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet and this doesn't mean that Planetside 2 will be released this way - as a full-priced game.
It might start as F2P anyway, or SOE might actually sell it at first, to get some extra cash from selling retail copies, and then go F2P to attract the masses, of course.
If it will appear on store shelves, I just hope there will be enough people that would have actually bught it in the first place, to build that crucial, critical initial mass of people, to make the game as appealing as possible just before it does go F2P.

Considering the PlanetSide IP isn't too popular, starting as a $50 title might be the beginning of PS2's end...

I'm not too concerned about that. During E3, anytime a company mentioned a price, it was $50. So it's pretty much the industry standard for a major title, and Planetside 2 is going to be a major title for SOE.

If it's good it will not matter, if it's bad it won't be due to the planetside IP's reputation it'll be because the game is bad.

That may be, but my idea is that titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 8 and Battlefield 6 will most likely keep selling themselves based on the brand alone. Not so many people would gladly throw away $50 to try out an IP they never heard of before. Just my concerns and my $0.02, anyway...

The scale of Planetside 2 will be so much more than those games can offer, I don't know how any nerd on the internet would turn down 1000 vs 1000 vs 1000 for 64 v 64

There was marketing and hype behind both these titles. We're fanbois so we don't need to be hyped, as for currently-unilluminated gamers we can only hope that PS2's marketing will be:
1) existent :P,
2) good enough.

I'm sure there will be marketing for PS2. Don't remember seeing any marketing for L4D or Crysis tbh. just a lot of articles on the internet...

Which by the way is happening with PS2 ^_^

I will pre-order when:

It's available in the UK to order.
I know if it will be on steam or not.
I know if they are offering pre-order bonuses for ordering at different places.

I have no doubt i will pre-order ASAP but I would hate to pre-order like with BF3 and then they offer a new place to pre-order and get an extra weapons pack which was not offered at the first pre-order places.... :S

I know what your saying and yes I would want that also but i would want it to be integrable with steam. I.E. Much like when you buy COD for example in the box it installs on steam.
