As I said before, you don't distinguish and call socialists just as easily communists as the other way around. A cow is an animal, but not every animal is a cow. Does make sense now: Hence your inappropriate arguments regarding (not) knowing what freedoms are and why you made that free market / capitalism argument earlier while supposing others are for state economies: you have no idea who or what you are talking about and just relate everything to distantly related things. Without being able nor willing to differentiate shades of colours, let alone shades of grey. |

Great Malorn. You just have no idea which states are authoritarian apparently. You presume too much. Social democrat ran states are not as authoritarian as you may think. Doesn't mean I agree with them (they spend and subsidise too much and use state money to get votes through project choices et all IMO), but they are nowhere near communist or even near South America style socialist who nationalise arbitrarily. One reason is a different built up of societies: elite vs poor and power distance is much greater in those cultures, the appeal of old school socialism is much greater there.
Really, nowhere near the same. Difference is not even subtle. |

I'd like to know what exactly you have against socialism. Did a socialist touch you in the naughty place as a child? Its just another way of doing things, one with both positives and negatives, same as with capitalism.
No system is perfect. Some things are better handled by consumer demand. The government has no need to be in the cell phone business(except insofar as it regulates the electromagnetic spectrum, a public, and very limited, resource). Some are better heavily regulated. Unlicensed nuclear power plants would be a Very Bad idea. Some are better handled by private industry. No, we don't need a state owned TV station like the BBC. Some are better handled by government. I don't think anyone wants to go back to the days of for profit fire services letting houses burn because the owners won't pay them. When did 'socialist' become a swear word to you? Democrats aren't socialists if you actually know what both mean. The Daily Show had a funny segment on this very topic:

Just as liberals have stopped using the word liberal to describe themselves. Now we want to be called progressives. Just as a democrat will hardly ever tell you want they really think. A few will here on this forum and its kinda scary. Just go back to the 08 Obama campaign. Higher gas/energy prices, fundamentally change America from top down, etc... |

Plus Obama has nothing to do with energy prices. For example oil prices are set by speculators. If a bee farts in the Persian gulf or a man sneezes on a pipe price will go up. The president has no say in oil/gas prices. So please don't give me or other people on this forum that BS. Last edited by Warhound; 2012-04-24 at 03:19 PM. |

Are you really naive enough to believe that the US Government has NOTHING to do with energy prices? Moratorium on offshore drilling, keystone pipeline, no lease for drilling on government owned property, no new oil refineries, EPA cracking down on coal power planets, no new permits for nuclear power. Just in Illinois alone we are shutting down a half dozen power planets because it would be to expensive to meet EPA requirements. I could go on and on. So with that said do you not see why speculators are seeing energy prices higher? Simple economics higher demand less supply = higher prices. This is not rocket science. Edit: also forgot the value of the dollar is going lower with historic low interest. Why? http://www.usdebtclock.org/ Last edited by HalfManHalfGod; 2012-04-24 at 03:57 PM. |

The democrats have done nothing socialist. They are practically clones of republicans just without the crazed religious people (well, not nearly as numerous) backing them. One favours tax cuts and aid for one end of the scale and the other favours the same for the other side of the scale. |
