F2P usually refers to the game not requiring a monthly subscription. It'd be a really bad business model to just GIVE the game you've been working on the past few years away. I don't know of any games that are just given away without some kind of monthly subscription required.

It's most likely the business model of the future, cos it 1) draws more playerbase 2) usually creates more revenue due to cash shops. Probably a prime example of current f2p games would be APB Reloaded, LotRO or perhaps Tibia. |

I actually like this idea. It's preventive of MAX spam because you're forced to specialize in a certain role for your MAX. Rather than having UniMAX and being able to do everything at the cost of cert points. |

Smed said there would be "F2P elements" - he didn't say the game would be F2P in its most extreme form. In that context he could have been referring to no monthly subscription, or optional monthly subscription.
Paying for the base game is important to help stave off hackers, and it is consistent with popular retail FPS games (battlefield, CoD, unreal, etc). All of those are "F2P" after you buy the game itself. And they also have said they aren't discussing the business model yet, which could mean its still being discussed. The retail price of the game though...that's standard for the industry so I don't see them making a drastic change there. |

That's right SOE, I'd rather give you more money. I hope you're listening. |

There was one guy who had spent like $1000 on LoL when it hadn't even been out for half a year. |

An FPS gamer is more a shit-talker/loser hybrid. They feel the need to prove themselves at the cost of pride in most cases. Which worries me about what things they might choose to put in the cash shop. Cash shop games tend to be huge imbalanced disasters as do SOE games. Mix the two of these together? N'oh my God. |

SOE stated the cash shop is purely cosmetic. That solves what you are worried about in that area. Having to buy the game first then having a non monthly sub option after also solves the issue of any hackers getting into the game. PS2 needs a non monthly sub option to survive. If PS had one I am sure the population would of never gotten to such low levels.
