People that aren't stuck in the early 'aughts have pretty much already agreed that they do.

Ok, just curious. Since customization is a big part of this game maybe we can have the standard iron sights, but be able to opt for a little transparent holographic display above the gun so it doesn't obstruct the view and an attachment that makes firing from the shoulder just as accurate as iron sights under 30m. That way it's not just a mandatory button I have to press without thinking every time I want to shoot. Everybody wins

I'm for iron sights so that there is more time needed to take a shot rather then just snap and fire.
also this gives way to the ability to have guns/units that take advantage of NOT having iron shots like a MAX most likely doesn't. (Anyone who's seen the pic of the max, doesn't it look like they wouldn't be able to bring up such a thing?) even HMGs might take advantage of such a thing.

My issue with iron sighting isn't reduced mobility, or slowing the pace of combat down. I don't mind reduced mobility -- I don't want bunny hopping, and I don't find adad to be particularly *rich* gameplay, per se.
And I like slower paced combat, as I think it discourages one-man-army syndrome and allows appropriate tactical approaches and promotes engaging in force. Why do I dislike iron sights, then? Because I dislike the notion that I need to press (or worse, hold) a button in order to "really" aim. If I've got my weapon readied, and I've got a crosshair up, I expect that crosshair to be useful. Now, this doesn't extend to bloom mechanics. Because that's all about trigger management, not whether or not you're aiming hard enough. I love cone of fire and crosshair bloom from PS, because I find jerking my view around to simulate recoil to be disorienting and annoying, and mastering the perfect amount of constantly pushing my mouse forward isn't a "skill" that I'm interested in developing and practicing and constantly honing. Instead, I think that blooming crosshairs present a more fun and approachable means to loosely simulate recoil. It's a gamist approach rather than a simulationist one, certainly, but that's often not a bad thing in the least. |

The reason iron sights exist is to slow down the movement/gameplay. It's 100% intentional and it's a design gimmick to make FPS more playable on an xbox controller. It's not something that's new and improved, and the reason you hardly ever saw it in a PC game (there were a few) before xbox is because it wasn't necessary with mouse precision.
Corridor run n gun shooters of pre-2005 were the best ones. They were competitive enough to nearly turn the genre into a sport- but the days of the big tourneys have come and gone with the rise of CoD/GoW/BF. Not too many people get excited at watching someone lying prone in a bush aiming down site. I hardly play shooters anymore because it is nothing but a big waste of time. The shooting games now a days are designed so you can sit on a couch, do what is considered "playing" with one hand, and stuffing your face full of doritos with the other. Ther're designed for the average joe, the console crowd, the casual gamer, and ADS is one of the gimmicks employed to make these games "fun" for everyone/anyone. Pretty soon I wouldnt be surprised if they invented a mechanic that let seniors play so they can get some of that baby boomer money. The bigger FPS games got, the worse they got. |

Iron sights can be useful if there's no reticle. But this isn't Killing Floor.
I'm used to iron sights by now, but I can see why they aren't common on PC games. Personally, I think giving that much precision to a mouse is a pretty bad idea. I'd be happy if PS2 didn't have iron sights, but the lower TTK would make it seem weird if they weren't there, since it's supposed to blend in with the more modern flavor of shooters. |

I don't mind Iron sights. Are they needed to make a game fun? IMO no. Do I really care if I get them, no. Do I care if they are removed no.
I do however have preferences on what I want my Iron sights to look like and would love to be able to customize Iron Sight in PS2. Or at the very least I would like to choose from more than one kind of sight for my weapon. I can pretty much say the only guns I do not use in CoD are pretty much because of their Iron Sights. So if they are in the game they are pretty important imo. It's my biggest deciding factor in a weapon besides it's fire rate and recoil. |

My personal thoughts on Iron Sights.
I dislike them, not because of the 'Slow down movement, slight zoom' thing. What I hate is the big, fat stonking gun taking up half of my screen. I also can't stand the so called 'iron sights' that still use a COF and bloom. If you damn well have iron sights, then it has to work like actual iron sights. The bullet has to go where the gun is aiming! And use the actual aim moving around to reduce accuracy. This is the worst thing about BF2-3 iron sights. |
